No guys, this is not about bathing suits.

Perhaps I am crazy, or maybe just old-fashioned, or possibly too "women's lib" for this. I happened to read this article about the Yoplait yogurt (light raspberry cheesecake) commercial that is being pulled because of concerns from an eating disorders group.

Does this commercial encourage eating disorders? (Video) - Healthy Living on Shine

I have to say that, in my opinion, this is absolutely ridiculous and a case of PC going way too far! I mean, come on, a commercial about a lady trying to decide whether or not to eat a piece of cheesecake vs. yoplait light raspberry cheesecake flavored yogurt is going to encourage eating disorders? Really? Has anyone stopped to consider that the complaining protesters just might be looking at the issue somewhat myopically, given their area of concern and all that?

I happen to like them both and most days I'll go for the yogurt -- it's cheaper, easier to get, and better for me. But, if I want a piece of cheesecake, I'll eat it.

I am so damned tired of the thought police in my country these days... :tantrum: Do they really think that we are so weak that a commercial is going to influence how we think???!!!

(and yeah, maybe I should have put this in Politics or News and Current Events but I figured since they're targeting women specifically, I'd post it in here).

The apple turnover is pretty good, too! Haven't tried the Boston creme pie yet...

I like the stuff!

Literally trillions upon trillions of dollars have been spent because companies and TPTB think exactly that.

Sadly enough, you have made an excellent point. They don't often influence me because I always look for the bias. Guess I'm part of a real minority...wonder if I could get some special treatment because of that? :roflmao:

I'm definitly dating myself..but I remember when the word "Gay" meant a person was HAPPY! In all reality..I do believe that Women's obsessions with their weight, all stemmed from the perfectly shaped Barbie Doll, but it doesn't make me want to take all the Barbie's off the shelves. The world is weird..what can I say??

Methodically disorganized
This phrase made me chuckle...
For people coping with anorexia and bulimia...
If someone has one of those disorders, they are ALREADY ill and employing the most absurd excuses to avoid dealing with their problem; some commercial will not affect them one way or the other.

I also think they miss the mark here...
Is the message that this yogurt tastes as good as cheesecake? That you should make healthy food choices at work? Or that, even if you're thin, you're still not thin enough?
How about option D: a healthy weight requires maintenance after the excess has been lost. Someone who chooses these yogurts (or other such foods) may not care about losing any more weight but simply maintaining the weight they are.

What message should have been sent? Instead of the second girl picking the yogurt, she takes half the cheesecake and sets herself up to be chubby again?

Wait a minute. Our own First Lady's pet cause is childhood obesity. Lib cities are banning salt, transfat, McDonalds toys, etc, etc. Hysterical documentarians are crying doom and gloom because we're a bunch of fat ass pigs.

And now these people are busting on yogurt companies for promoting a 100 calorie fat-free yogurt instead of a chunk of cheesecake???

Seriously???

I love the Yoplait yogurts! I also like the Walmart (Great Value?) brand yogurts. I get the Light yogurts and they are only 80 calories for a 6oz container. (So is another brand, but I can't think of the name offhand.)

Those commercials don't influence me either. I would have picked the piece of cheese cake before or after seeing the commerical. If I'm going to get a snack, I'd might as well get the real thing.

They actually DID change Barbie's proportions! Though the article claims it wasn't because of feminists hollering about bad body image. Barbie Doll to Get More Real / Smaller bust, wider waist, flatter feet -- even her smile is changing

As to the commercial promoting eating disorders? I don't think so. I think the original actress in there is being more than a little bit silly, but I imagine the intent was to exaggerate the trade offs to make a point. At no point in there did I hear her say "Oooh, I could have a piece of cheese cake and then puke it back up later!" or just decide to totally pass on the cheesecake.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with the commercial promoting their (allegedly) just as tasty, healthier substitute.

Since the Yoplait wusses caved in to the whining of the insane, I'ma have to think about giving them my money now.

This is one of the biggest problems in our society today. Some looner special interest flake #####es about something, and instead of the company ignoring them for the nut they are, they take it seriously and try to appease.
