Adopters: Have you ever wondered..

:yeahthat: Exactly. I can't stand when people assume abuse just because a dog shows as timid, defensive or submissive, etc. It drives me crazy enough to start foaming at the mouth... and no that doesn't automatically mean I have rabies.

Were you abused as a puppy?

I know of many timid cats also, and to my knowledge they were not abused (some we've had since they were 5 weeks old) - they just have a shy/timid personality. The senior we are getting tomorrow came from Port Tobacco and she had been bred (10 years old, not spayed, with sagging teats) and she is just the happiest little thing! No telling how she was treated for 10 years. I will try to find out if she was turned in or was picked up as a stray.

We were talking about the past lives of critters in a different thread and sometimes people think a dog that shakes was abused in the past, but we had someone say they had their dog from a small puppy and the dog just is like that, no abuse at all. So as much as we like to speculate, we never really know unless we can see scars (like my boy has all over his face/neck) which would indicate dog fighting in my case.

I've had several people ask if I knew if Maggie was abused before. She jumps and scares easily over every little loud noise and movement. I have to explain that being skittish/jumpy/anxious (almost like a cat) is a big breed characteristic of Shiba Inus. Very, very doubtful there was any abuse there. She cowers and throws her ears back when I sing too loud in the car, but I'm pretty sure that's just a different form of abuse

I kept saying that I was sure that Boxy had been abused, but in the end I came to realize that all his 3 years of life (2 were with me) that it could have been that Boxy just had a screw loose?

I have a hard time listening to MYSELF if I sing .... can't imagine what my dog hears if he's with me LOL

Yeah, I don't think that shaking definitely means a dog's been abused. My rat terrier shook when she was anxious about something and she was never treated with anything but kindness.

our newest addition is a happy girl. She charges ahead sniffing the ground when she's being walked and doesn't want to stop - she stumbles and keeps on going. What a sweetie she is.

Now here's a bit of strange behavior ... she pushed dirt on top of the dry food in her bowl to cover it and in the process spilled it all over the ground. She later ate it off the ground. Now why would she do that?

She is a doomsday prepper. Most likely, food didn't come easy so now that she has it, she is hiding it for later.

I have a rescue that came to us starving and we find her doomsday piles of food everywhere.

Either that or dirt makes the food taste better.

This morning I put her food bowl inside the dog house - she'd have to do a lot of work to get it outside in the dirt. Hoping to get her cleared by my vet so she can be introduced to the cats inside and she can hang out with them in the a/c. She is housebroken, so someone kept her indoors I assume. She tried to get in my lap when I was driving home yesterday - I need to find a way to restrain her when she goes for car rides.

We had a cockapoo when I was growing up who would bury her bones when a thunderstorm was coming - she'd dig them back up afterwards.

I love that story. Our pets are smart, as well as adorable, and add so much to our lives. Your story is a great example of a wonderful memory!

My Boston Terrier buries her food in my floor plants.

oh my - I like the dogs to eat outside if the weather is decent, less mess inside, but I have to feed Hazel indoors to stop her from burying her food. Thankfully she's not a messy eater like my other dog.

That is odd. My experience with dogs that had been deprived of food is that they seem to have bottomless pits. My male is always hungry, and Hazel seems to be the same. My boy was a seizure by P G County animal control and he was quite thin. Hazel was a stray and she also was thin when she arrived at The Humane Society. She was transferred to Tri-County and luckily I had been checking and looking for a companion female for my boy, she was mouthy which was just perfect since my boy rarely barks. Boxy used to bark a LOT. I miss him.
