I let my son stay home at 13 by himself, but only from about 30 minutes to an hour. I'm not sure what the legal age is, but I think it is younger then 13. You pretty much have to go by the maturity of the kid though. Now my son is almost 15 and I leave him home to watch my other 2 children sometimes but no more then a couple of hours at a time. I also do not allow any cooking to go on while I'm gone, not even in the microwave because things can catch fire in there too. Good luck with your decision! :howdy:

Isn't it 8 if alone and then 10 or 12 if "supervising" another child? I know it's on the forums somewhere.

Not that its any help, but i think i remember it being one age to stay by themselves and an older age to stay at home and babysit younger siblings

Yeah well, he is old enough to do both now. I tried to call my husband because he remembers the ages, but he didn't answer his phone. As soon as I get in touch with him I will post it. :yay:

Q: "At what age can a child be left home alone in Maryland?"
A: Family Law Article, § 5-801, provides:

(a) A person who is charged with the care of a child under the age of 8 years may not allow the child to be locked or confined in a dwelling, building, enclosure, or motor vehicle while the person charged is absent and the dwelling, building, enclosure, or motor vehicle is out of the sight of the person charged unless the person charged provides a reliable person at least 13 years old to remain with the child to protect the child.

(b) A person who violates this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and on conviction is subject to a fine not exceeding $500 or imprisonment not exceeding 30 days, or both.

If that's it that is just too freakin' young! There is no way on this earth I would leave my 8 yr. old home alone. I'm scared for him to be by himself upstairs! If left alone to long he gets into trouble. He's my little green eyed monster!

"Enclosure?"

So it's okay for me to put my kids in a cage as long as I can see it?

Age limit to stay at ho... 08-07-2007 02:00 PM You don't allow your 15 year old to cook?! Is he retarded?

:lmao: No he's not retarded, I'm paranoid! I let him cook when I'm home, I just don't feel comfortable with him cooking anything when I'm not home. Accidents happen and I would absolutely DIE if something happened to my kids while I was out having fun one night that's all. So I fix them something to eat before I leave and they have no reasons to be cooking.

Totally agree with you there - twice my sister managed to set the kitchen on fire when we were teens - once by simply letting the tea kettle smoke into oblivion. Little brother came close once, by trying to make an open faced cheese and bacon sandwich - IN THE TOASTER. Both times, Mom was still at work - this was after school.

I would be reluctant to let my kids cook in the house when I'm not around. I've seen otherwise bright kids do extraordinarily stupid things, with dire consequences.

I started making dinner for the whole family when I was 14. My mom would leave a note on what to cook so dinner would be ready when my parents got home from work.
