Yes, you cannot prove "beyond a reasonable doubt" that the threat what serious.
No it's not a joke, just as yelling "Fire" in a theater is not a joke. The law says any threat and does not differentiate if the intent was to be a joke or an actual threat.

One thing I realized by reading this thread. Looks like we have found all of the people who actually listen to Air America :lmao:
I tried watching it on TV (they are on IFC in the morning sometimes) and I couldn't watch it for more than a couple minutes. It was just stupid.

As for this topic...I really don't remember anyone doing anything similar regarding Clinton, Gore, etc. It's tough to argue a hypothetical situation.

For those that think this type of thing is ok, where is the line drawn? Where does it go from being ok to being not ok? I've always been taught that saying anything about killing the President is illegal...jest or not.

This is a clear threat against the POTUS. Anyone who "sees it differently" is just being stupid and excusing ugly behavior from their fellow liberals.

So Sam Spade and Bustem Down are liberals? Interesting. Vrai, you are the one that isn't being rational here.

As for the law the Ken brings up, that would apply if this was threat. This isn't a threat. It was a tasteless act to disparage President Bush's proposal. nothing more.

Jesus H. Christ, I would love to see what y'all would be saying if Rush did something like this to Clinton or future Democratic President X.

Now, while I took your side... I have to say Rush wouldn't do something like that. Maybe Ann Coulter, but not Rush.

:yikes: Jerry Springer has a talk show on Air America. He is much more in control of his Socialist leanings than both Franken and Rhodes but he's still Jerry Springer.

Okay, then - let's break it down:

Do you agree that there were shots fired in that clip?

Do you agree that the VO said, "Well, here's your answer, you ungrateful whelp"?

Do you agree that the "whelp" in question is President Bush?

If I said to you, "Try it, you little bastard" and cocked a gun, would you consider it a threat?

When that happens, you might be able to make it into an argument. Of course, I'd be saying the same things. It's wrong no matter who does it, but as has been pointed out before...have any conservatives ever made a joke like this? Did other conservatives defend them? AFAIK, the answer is no.

I would also love to see what you all would be saying.

The words "bawl, "bellow", "blare", "caterwaul", "holler", "howl", "jar", "roar", "screak", "scream", "screech", "shout", "shriek", "shrill", "squeal", "wail", "yell", "yip" and "yowl" spring immediately to mind.

Rr...

I would also suggest that you hit on your own side's use of hateful rhetoric, such as the statement that the filibuster is used "against people of faith." Or the statement how it's "understandable" why there's so much violence against judges.

I guarantee you the Piper has yet to be paid for Delays Schaivo fiasco, the subsequent attack on judges, CONSERVATIVE judges, and Frists side trip into making ones religion so central to public discourse.

The thing is this constant looney bin brain fart thing the left does. It is SO hard to hold ones own accountable when freaks start crawling out of their mental sewers.

Her weak apology for what someone else did on her show is on the website.

I am convinced, more than ever, that the whole thing is concocted to to get more than 11 listeners world wide at one time. This is more publicity than they could afford to buy. As long as their lineup is so radical left, they won't survive.

Well, that's true, considering that there are stories every month practically about how they don't pay their rent or light bill or payroll.

§ 871. Threats against President and successors to the Presidency

(a) Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits for conveyance in the mail or for a delivery from any post office or by any letter carrier any letter, paper, writing, print, missive, or document containing any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States, the President-elect, the Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President of the United States, or the Vice President-elect, or knowingly and willfully otherwise makes any such threat against the President, President-elect, Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President, or Vice President-elect, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.

Is it still a joke?
So how backed up do you think the courts would be if they prosecuted "every" "any" there was? If they did that they would never catch any real threats. I'd rather they concentrated on the credible threats.

Are you assuming this is going to court??? Don't you think someone should say....hold it Randi, you've gone too far, put a lid on it!? That is all that is going to happen. That is all that should happen. Randi Rhodes says it was inappropriate. Of course she says it was done without her permission and would never have given permission. :liar: If this wasn't nipped in the bud, there is no way the SS could keep up with what is or isn't credible.

I agree. It was inappropriate. This is more of an ethical matter than criminal.

How about they use the brains that got them into the Secret Service in the first place.

1) Investingate ANY AND ALL threats.
2) Persue "credible" threats.

It's like I said yesterday, I'm not all that worked up about the bit on the radio. What shocks and amazes me is all this talk that seems to be saying, "Bah - so a law was broken... but it was just a joke. No harm, no foul."

If we're going to start picking and choosing which laws we're going to obey, I have a few choice ones, I'm going to start ignoring, effective immediately.

It doesn't take brains to get into the secret service. I know a couple people who have and they have no brains. The easiest way in is a military background and a secret clearance.
