Yes, but parents aren't always the experts on parenting. I am no expert either but doesn't having standards give the kids the opportunity to practice self discipline? Something seriously lacking by many.

Not a problem, as long as the parent takes the time to explain it that way and what is and is not acceptable. I fear some would just let'em drink at home and have not have conversation other than "dont tell anyone I let you drink at home"

Forget what your parents or your HS friend's parents did. Many parents today who are providing booze for their kids and whatever friends come over are not teaching their kids responsibility. They want to be the "cool" mom or dad. They are not supervising the kids even if they happen to be in the house when whatever party is going on. The whole "they will try it anyway" line is a load of crap. I drank a grand total of 1 time as a teen and was scared to death of my mother finding out. Didn't touch another drop until I was good and past 21.

You may not have had many drinks under the age of 21, but that is rare. The "they will try it anyway" theory is not a "load of crap." The fact is, more than 70% of students on college campuses binge drink. Most college students do not turn 21 until their senior year (if they went directly from high school to college), so the majority of students are obviously drinking underage.

87% of all college students have experienced problems resulting from drinking such as physical assault, sexual harassment, and impaired sleep and study time. Why not allow them to have a few drinks every once in a while and learn their limits and how to control themselves while they are still under your roof? I dont understand why a parent would rather their teens wait to try alcohol until they are on their own with a bunch of other young binge drinkers, where there is great potential for dangerous situations to arise.

That is on college campuses. That doesn't mean I should allow my underage child or any of her friends to drink under my roof. I certainly would not be gracious towards any adult who gave my child booze. :smack:

She sees me and other relatives enjoy a grown-up beverage or two, but also knows that going out and getting s***faced is not a desireable thing. She also knows if I ever, ever, ever, ever find out she has drank while underage what will happen :buttkick: .

I would rather my child drink under my supervision than going elsewhere and doing it. Kids are bound to experiment....whether it be sex, drugs, or alcohol. I rather be in the know. I am not going to crowd my child and be too overprotective and when she is old enough to go out into the world...she goes buck wild. And believe me thats what happens. You need experience, and let them make some of their own mistakes, (nothing seriously life threatening or altering) its all a part of the learning process and something called life.

It's probably rare because parents allow their kids to booze it up these days and they don't get in trouble for it.

When I was a kid, the ones that drank the most at parties and such were the kids whose parents didn't care if they did it, and they wouldn't get in trouble. These were the parents who let their kid throw beer bashes, where the drunkest one at the party was their kid. The rest of us kept it mellow because we were scared of Mommy and Daddy.

I never was. Mainly because I didn't drink a lot because my mother would slap my ass for me.

Yes but it seems to be the more control a parent had over a kid, the more that kid just wanted to break away.

Mmm...my kids didn't do that. However, I do know someone who pretty much let their kid run wild with drinking, drugs and sex, so the kid....drank, did drugs and had sex.

I guess it depends on the parents and the child.
