Am I crazy?

Well yes, but that's beside the point.....

Anyway, here's the deal.... I hate my job. I really really hate it. I've been doing Navy contracting for 4 years now and I'm about to lose my marbles. It's just not my thing. I've been throwing around the idea of going to beauty school part time and get licenced and quitting this nonsence. I work for a bunch of communists and I hate the drive into DC every day and am seriously considering doing this soon. What do you guys think?

I am a recovering cosmetologist - my license expired about 4 years ago. It's fun and I enjoyed it. There's something very satisfying about taking an average woman and making her beautiful. I'd do it again in a minute before I'd work for some contractor in a cubicle.

Get out of DC before the lovely federal DC welfare tax comes into affect.

Good luck and pursue your dreams. :smooch:

That's what I'm thinking.... The enjoyment aspect of it all. I hate this type of work. I'm smart and good at it but there is nothing enjoyable about it in the least. :boo:

I think it would be great to do something you love. The problem is that many of us can't afford it. Lots of beauticians make good $$, and you have a great personality for that type of thing. I'd go for it if I were you.

I've been working for Navy contractors since '98, and have liked some jobs and disliked others. I can't say that I have loved any of them, but they pay the bills and I like it enough. I recently started a new job and it's the happiest I've been in a while - the people are all wonderful (both the Govies and the Contractors), the job is financial (which I prefer), and I don't mind coming to work in the morning. However, a couple of mos. ago when I was at my old job I was absolutely miserable and couldn't wait to leave. I wanted to leave contracting all together and get a normal job somewhere, but the $$ just wasn't there.

Good luck! You have nothing to lose!

I've been throwing the idea around myself. I just don't know how much money I could make doing it for a living. Plus, I don't think I'd like standing on my feet all day and having to deal with 'funky' people. :ohwell:

My dear, life is to short and to precious to waist. Follow your dreams. It seems many people here have a lot of love and faith in you... take the leap. Even with my limited knowledge of you, I believe you will be great at what ever you choose.

I think there's plenty of money in it if you're good at it. I think the initial paycut I would take would still make up for itself in the long run. Plus if you're smart about it (which I am, toot toot) you'll not only do hair but nails too (which provides the opportunity to sit down). You save money by not having to pay someone else to do your hair (for me that's about $100 a month). I lose the commute and the cost of that. And it's a job that will go anywhere. Right now I'm pretty limited to the DC area or Pax. Neither of which are really close to home.

That's my problem. There are lots of things I'd enjoy doing, but none of them bring home the right amount of bacon.

Well said. You should never get pinned in a job you do not like... Especially as young as some of you are..

Dean's friend's wife (got all that, lol) is a stylist making BANK!! She was a manager at a Unique Chic for a while before their son was born, and then she stayed at home for a few years. She recently went back, but wanted something nicer than a cheesy shop like that. She got a job at a really trendy and nice salon and is doing fabulous.

Pix, I don't think you're crazy in the least. Most people live their lives hating their professions. There aren't many people that can actually say that they love and enjoy what they do. I say go for it! You're only here once, so you may as well enjoy it.

I would never want to be a stylist, lol, it's not me. I mean things such as a loan processor, bank teller, etc... But...they don't pay jack. Loan officers can make some $$ after they climb the ladder, but I'm not willing to take a fat paycut to start at entry level.

That's the thing - when you're young you start in whatever job comes your way, and you gain experience in that field and work your way up. If at some point you should decide to do something different you're almost forced to start at entry level...which is sometimes just TOO much of a paycut to make it a feasible option.

What about going to Beauty School part time while you work...
And maybe even take some business classes...

You might even be able to open your own salon.

Maybe Vrai could help me out on this one.... But it's my understanding that most beauticians work off comission; plus they get tips. I've talked to the girl who does my hair and she makes GOOD money. Most of you would be shocked. I'm not talking about working at the Hair Cuttery. The place I go isn't outrageous by any means with their prices. So let's take an average place say that a hair cut is $20. I don't know what the % of comission is but we'll say you get $8 of that, then a $5 tip. That's $13 right there, how long does a haircut take 15-20 minutes. I'm thinking like $26 an hour is about average. Then you usually get comission for selling products. That's just for cuts, add in colors and perms and whatnot else and the money can't be all that bad.
