Do the salons provide health insurance, vacation, 401K, retirement? I'm sure some do but at what cost to you and how good are the benefits? Just something to think about.

Well I get bent over here paying for my benefits and they aren't all that great. Plus my divorce will be final soon and I can take the loser off my policy saving some money every month.

I say - write out a list of pros and cons. Talk to others already in the profession to find out what a reasonable expectation is on take home pay, hours, benefits, etc. Price out the school and the hours and make sure it fits with your schedule. You need to bring your own models for class, I am sure you can find plenty of volunteers from the forums. Last, follow your heart. Try something new. Don't wake up one day to find that you have become an office drone. You are intelligent, skilled and talented. So if this turns out to be something you don't want to do forever, you can find something else.
I still wish I had apprenticed out to become a welder when I was younger. :bawl: Regrets are horrible things.

Yes, unfortunately. Now that I'm OLD, I look back on career moves I made that weren't the smartest things I ever did. You really have to plan for being older and that's when you REAAALLY get tired of working and the commute. I do agree that you should do something you like and if you make the change while you are young and can take a pay cut, good for you, go for it.

It's definitely something to consider. Paying for medical insurance out of pocket is quite pricey.

p.s. I fixed your smiley, Kwil :bubble:.

So long as you don't have any major health problems, it's not that bad for someone our age...

I paid $70/mo. for Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield when I was unemployed, and that was the adjusted high cost because I have a heart condition.

Exactly. While you may think you pay alot now, just try it on your own. Some group insurance is probably available for that profession but, generally speaking, those plans are pretty expensive. Just giving "mom" advice, that's all.

That is the cheapest I've EVER heard of. Most times it's way more than that, especially when you have to pay for a child on the policy also.

Was it an HMO, PPO, POS?? What was your deductible? You can get cheap (relatively) but it doesn't cover much.

I don't recall exactly
I believe Anthem BCBS is PPO or POS. I think I had a five thousand dollar deductible and a $10 copay.

I don't think I got the top-of-the-line available, but I was going for "better than nothing" as a temporary thing until I got back to work.
