That's the thing - when you're young you start in whatever job comes your way, and you gain experience in that field and work your way up. If at some point you should decide to do something different you're almost forced to start at entry level...which is sometimes just TOO much of a paycut to make it a feasible option.
I was a house painter for about 10 years. (didnt think I was gonna ever finish that house) Anyways I taught myself computers.. I dig the job I have now. Better than painting and sheetrock.

how long does a haircut take 15-20 minutes.

My trims take about an hour usually. But I think there are plus-up days, too. Some days you'd have more appointments than others, and other times you might be doing color for 2 hours on one person. Just depends. At any rate, they don't make bad $$ at most salons.

Isn't there a job out there that will pay me 6 figures to sit around the house, watch Oprah, eat Bon-Bons and tan?

Oh yea, it's called 'Find a sugar daddy and marry him' :bubble:

I have NEVER had a trim take an hour! :yikes: While I'm getting my hair colored (1 - 1.5 hours) my girl usually cuts a head or two of hair while my hair is processing.

Well hell, that sounds good, then! My trims take about 50-60 minutes b/c my hair is thick. I also have long layers. By the time she washes, trims, and blow dries, an hour has passed.

At any rate, with professions like that there are days that are better than others, and it all evens out at paycheck time.

I agree Pix, follow your dreams - get your license, build up a nice/loyal customer base and then steal them away when you open your own shop!

Sorry about that chief.
Follow your dreams, what else can I say. I too hate the commute and am seriously considering a $10K pay cut and paying my own move back to the midwest for a smalltown life. Better for the kids, better for my sanity.

Pixie,

I am going to throw some ideas here based on what I 've seen or experienced. I am going to use the word 'garba' in short for "garage/basement". I have seen few relatives of mine in WV doing this kind of thing from their home.

I have seen them:
- set up hair salon in the 'garba' with a nice walk in/out door and windows.
- set your own hours doing the hair biz from your 'garba' while going to beautician school part time.
- build up the loyal customer base over time from 'garba' biz
- whatever you learn in classes , apply yourself with new techniques and new skills gaining experiences in your own part time 'garba' biz.
- your kid(s) stay with you at home while you doing the work part time.

Then when you are ready, your loyal customers will follow you to wherever you start working fulltime.

Do the salons provide health insurance, vacation, 401K, retirement? I'm sure some do but at what cost to you and how good are the benefits? Just something to think about.

It depends on the salon, and/or hours you work. I know a few that have good benefits, while others have their hours cut by just 1-2 to avoid them the advantage of benefits.

Good points, I hadn't even considered that.
