I have been thinking about getting an American Mastiff, Does anyone out there have any experiance with them? I've done some research on the net but that won't always tell you everything.

There is an American Mastiff, however is not AKC recognized. They are registered with CKC. They are much larger than the Bull Mastiff, they have less problems and longer lifespans

I understand that that's what they're called. It's like a cocerpoo (cocker spaniel + poodle). There is no real breed per say. They're mixed breeds. I could breed a Rot and a Pit and call it an american mastiff just like you could breed a neo and a pit and call it the same. They'd be totally different dogs but called the same thing. Another popular term is bandog.

From what I have read about the American Mastiff they get over 200 pounds and the leg and hip problems are not as common

I did a beautiful 160 lb blue brindle mastiff the other day..he was young and already had over $3000 in leg surgeries...he was nice though..and really pretty.

I want a dog that big but they all seem to have problems. I would love to have any type of mastiff (especially a Cane Corso) or a Newfie but I've never seen one without hip or knee problems.

You should get a Tosa Inu. Cool looking dogs.

Hey Momma!

Were you talking bout the ones that look like English Mastiffs without the drool? I just thought about those too and remembered that they were also called American Mastiffs. We just may be talking two different dogs with the same name. :huggy:

No dear. I was thinking American Bulldog but researched just as you did and found the same website you did. I guess I didn't read it correctly because I ddin't see anything about a mix, just that they aren't recognized by the ACK. There are other breeds out there as well that aren't.

Hey Pix I think they are like the English without the drool, If your looking for a big dog you might want to check them out. As far as a Pit, aren't they banned in MD?

The other ones I was thinking about are called American Mastiffs too (the ones that look like English Mastiffs). My original thought was of a bandog commonly called an American Mastiff. They're all mixes. Some Neo/Pit some Rot/Pit. Now American Bulldogs are originally just really big Pits (well their lines). Too many people making new "breeds" and not being creative enough with the names.
