See thats why I couldn't get a pit, I live in PG. I have though about an Irish Wolfhound, but they have short life spans

Naw I do alot of Pitts and all that I do are wonderful dogs. I do not ever trust them around other dogs..and I tell owners that they need to watch out for contact with smaller animals but all of MINE are sweethearts..

Get a life....get a Boxer

I'm bringing Mily over to visit you one day. I can't decide if she's just terribly tolerant or just really dumb. She wants to play with my mom's JRT so bad all the time. My mom's cranky old lady just snaps at her. Mily jumps back then lowers herself and starts making her "Chewbacha" noises again to play. My mom's dog caught her on the side of the face and she just went on trying to play with her. She needs a friend big time.

Well I guess you could say I have the Tim Allen syndrone, Bigger and more power. I have a big 4X4 truck so I need a big dog to match, I don't want to ride around with my dog lookng all tiny in my big truck.

Well 100 pounds is usually a HUGE dog. You don't want to go too big because you'll run into a lot more health problems. What good is having a huge dog if the poor thing can't go anywhere with you because it can't even walk. What about an American Bulldog? Or a Bull Mastiff?

Pixie from what I have read the American Mastiffs have less problems than Bull Mastiffs. I mean am I getting bad information? All the sites I checked were fairly consistent with their information, including that the life span which is longer for the American, as well as the statement made on sites that say they generally do not have hip or leg problems. Are these places wrong?? This is why I wanted to ask people, to hear real voices on these dogs.

You were talking bout the one's that look like English Mastiffs right? I don't recall reading that they had a lot of problems. That being said most mixed bred dogs don't have the problems pure bred dogs do. They were from mixed heratige. Maybe you should check out the local shelters and stuff and look for a large mix breed. Save a life and save a ton of money.

Well Pixie I have considered that. But I want a puppy, a dog I can raise from the get go. I have lots of nieces and a nephew so I want to make sure he would be raised around kids, and well trained. I don't think I would get the same bond, same respect from a middle aged dog.

I got a 12 week old puppy from a rescue. Who said you can't get a pup? Matter of fact one of the nicest looking dogs I've ever seen was from the Tri County Shelter. I have no clue what it was but it was young (probably 10 months or so) and it was beautiful. They labeled him as a lab mix (yeah right he was already 100+ pounds).

Just a suggestion though. Something that's at least worth looking into.

I'm keeping an open mind, If I found a puppy at a shelter i might consider it, but I just want to make sure I find the right Dog for me

Hey Pixie, I found 2 breeders of American Mastiffs in Maryland, they both have a 6 month to a year waiting list. I might go check them out in a couple weeks.

I have an american mastiff. I did a lot of research and was told he would have a dry mouth and less hip/knee problems, BS. He is by far the most wonderful dog I have ever had. If you need any info let me know.

Ok, I have talked to them on the phone before. How old is yours? How long were you on the waiting list? Have you had any Health, or Hip Problems?

He is 16 months old. He was confirmed to have hip dysplacia(sp) at 5 months. The breeders said none of their other dogs had any problems. He is a wonderful boy. I have a small child and he gets along great with her. Other kids not as well. He is very needy. If you can't spend alot of time with him he gets very sad. He must be with his people all the time.
