He is 16 months old. He was confirmed to have hip dysplacia(sp) at 5 months. The breeders said none of their other dogs had any problems. He is a wonderful boy. I have a small child and he gets along great with her. Other kids not as well. He is very needy. If you can't spend alot of time with him he gets very sad. He must be with his people all the time.

Wow, Sorry to hear that you have had problems.

I was not on the waiting list very long. What I did was put together a package with letters from my vet, from other people who knew how I was with my dogs. I had pictures of my house, yard, and I visited with them about 4 times. Be prepared to buy a ramp or step for your car/truck as it is very bad for them to jump. No running for the first two years.

I have been thinking about getting an American Mastiff, Does anyone out there have any experiance with them? I've done some research on the net but that won't always tell you everything.
My sister has one. It's a wimp. It's so scared of me that it won't come within 10 feet of me unless my sister/brother-in-law/father are standing there holding his collar.

hmmm interesting, I kinda like that fact, but I want a dog that will stand up for me and my family, not be a wimp about things.

He is VERY protective about HIS family and property. He barks at the doorbell and strangers, just has some aversion to me. No, I never beat her dog or was mean to it in any way. When they moved to Georgia, he chased the neighbor cat from his front door, across the road and to the back of the cat's property (probably close to 1/8-1/4 mile all told).

See thats what I want. I get the same thing from some dogs. 99% of dogs love me, but a few seem to be scared. My friends dog will have nothing to do with me or come in the same room as me. I think that comes from him trying to gun break him when he was a puppy at the turkey shoot and I was there. First time I saw the dog so maybe it does not like me for that reason

I had a 160 pound female Neopolitan Mastiff before I downsized to my American Bulldogs. She was a great dog and scary as he!! if you didn't know her. I bought her from a vet named Sheri Allen who ownes Ironstone Kennels in Pa.
Most of the BIG dogs have hip/ elbow problems though no matter what the breeder tells you. It's just a matter of how long until it shows up.

My neighbor had a Mastiff. It was the most magnificent and sweetest dog I'd ever seen. But it drooled awfully and, other than its appearance, was not very protective. When I found out about the dry-mouthed (american) mastiff, we almost got one. I even had a name for him, "Zeus". But we were concerned about the short life span and health problems associated with the giant breed. We ended up getting a Rottie from a wonderful breeder and couldn't be happier.

Great Dogs

We have two dogs. Both great breeds that I would get again and again...

and a:

Both were rescues and they are both the best dogs I've ever owned. They get along well with one another (and small dogs too) dispite what people might think. My in-laws have a chihuahua, don't think you can go much smaller than that.

Go for the Target dog. You'll love 'em.

I'm going to get a little lap monkey of some sort (yorkie or something) and name him Zeus.

Go for a Min Pin. Aside from looking cool, they seem OK too. A friend has a male and he is awsome.

Hey Pixie, I found 2 breeders of American Mastiffs in Maryland, they both have a 6 month to a year waiting list. I might go check them out in a couple weeks.

Did you ever get an american mastiff or check out the breeders? DH and I have gotten back on the AM kick and I'm curious as to what you found and decided. The guy I talked to at Orion Farms recently was extremely helpful. Deepwater Acres does not seem to be accepting additional names on their wait list at the moment though.

We love American Mastiffs!

Hi everyone,

We love American Mastiffs and want you to be part of this great, new dog networking and video site.

We’re from a new web site called Worldwide Fido (www.worldwidefido.com), and we have big plans: we’re working to make it the best site on the web for dog video, a place where you’ll find a huge collection of clips created by our users and starring their favorite canine friends. Worldwide Fido users vote for the videos they like best, and those who upload the most popular clips can win all kinds of prizes.

We’re also about to debut our new web show, with frequent episodes that will feature Worldwide Fido’s funniest, most touching, and just plain best videos, as well as lots of stories about what’s happening in the world of dogs.

As part of getting Worldwide Fido off the ground, we’re going around the web looking for people who love dogs and dog video. We’d like to invite you to join the Worldwide Fido community and upload your video, so that our users can check it out, too. (BTW, Worldwide Fido is completely free.)

Once you’re part of Worldwide Fido you can upload as many dog videos as you like. And you might see one of your clips included in our web show!

If all this sounds good to you, please cut-and-paste the link below to join Worldwide Fido, upload your video, and start enjoying all our site has to offer. We respect your privacy and are anti-spam. For more information, please view our privacy policy (http://worldwidefido.com/privacy_policy). If you have any questions, please contact Team Fido at fido@worldwidefido.com.

We hope to see you there!

Best wishes,
Sarah

Why doesn't this person wanting this American Mastiff...snicker...just go adopt something large from a shelter and save a few $$$ in upfront cost, save a life, and not be putting money in the pockets of someone who most likely isn't a reputable or responsible breeder in the first place? I'm all for pet ownership but also a HUGE fan of adoption. We have way to many unwanted pets out there starving for a great home.

The other ones I was thinking about are called American Mastiffs too (the ones that look like English Mastiffs). My original thought was of a bandog commonly called an American Mastiff. They're all mixes. Some Neo/Pit some Rot/Pit. Now American Bulldogs are originally just really big Pits (well their lines). Too many people making new "breeds" and not being creative enough with the names.

american bandogge mastiff

american mastiff

another american mastiff
