Another copperhead in SOMD

In My Opinion
I down loaded that picture for my desktop.
what a beautiful snake.

I caught a couple young ones a few years ago in my yard, about 8" long, and released them down along the patuxent river where I knew that others were.

they were not happy with being caught and carried, but I figure that since they just slithered off and didnt bite me, they appreciated my efforts in bringing them to happier hunting grounds with many snake babes to date.

I believe Copperheads get the reputation of being aggressive not because they attack but because they do just what yours did...quote:It stayed there for a photo op then went on his way.....They do not haul butt like a Black Snake or Northern Watersnake. I can't remember ever seeing a Copperhead in a hurry.

Thank you willie for refering to the second snake as a...Northern Watersnake...to many people in So. Md. think that they are Water Moccasins. The Water moccasin does not make its home in Maryland. But it does use mimicry to defend itself.

I was walking along the patuxent river between 214 and governers bridge rd about 4 years ago when I came up to a spot where the water had cut through the shore area and filled a swamp like area behind it. The cut was about three feet deep and down in the bottom were about 10 or more copperheads all rolling around each other.
I bet if I would have just hopped on down in there with them, I would have considered them aggressive at that point.
However, after seeing them, I jumped on over the washout and went on my way without a worry.

WARNING: NSFRR (Not safe for RR)

Why this snake didn't bite me is beyond me. He spared me, so I spared him.

This is by far the biggest copperhead that I have ever seen though. The colors in him were perfect and in such sharp contrast. What a neat lookin snake!

That sure is one fine specimin there, great colors! I wonder if maybe it's getting ready to molt, and couldn't see well enough to know what was going on, so it didn't strike?

pony i have to disagree with you on the fact about copperheads being less aggressive. The copperhead is an aggressive snake it will strike as a first defense were a rattle snake will flee as a first defense. If cornered all snakes including non poisonous will strike.
The only two copperheads I've run into were non-agressive. The first one, at Calvert Cliffs, took a lot of poking before he crawled off the trail into the woods. Never once struck at the stick. The other one at St Marys lake made a hasty escape when I poked him. I wouldn't have bothered them except they were both on trails.

:yeahthat: Never understood why some folks want to kill snakes.
This weekend, we were riding on Rt. 609 between Rt. 20 and Rt. 29. Big Red Tail Hawk flew off from a fence post as we approached and he had a snake in his talons. Couldn't see what kind it was, but he came close to dropping it on us as we went by. :yikes:

Yeah, found some babies like that last year. Whacked them with a shovel and they kept on moving. Quick little sh!tz. Used the pointy part and chopped them up.
