Anyone serve on a carrier?

Today I watched the show about the USS Reagan. They said the mess halls operated 23 hours a day. Do they make you eat in shifts and only at a certain time or can you come back as many times as you want and eat as much as you want?

USS Saratoga sailor here. 23 hour a day meal service. You went to eat when you got time. Usually, one time through the line was plenty. Food wasn't really appetizing enough for seconds.

Yes, something is available 23 hours a day. As sailors, we love to B**** about things and the food was one of them. But in reality, I never saw anybody starve to death. Most of it was actually very good (especially in the Chief's Mess). Saratoga 1983-84, 85-86, Independence 78-79, and some AOE's/AOR's. I can state with experience the food was best in this order: Chief's Mess, enlisted mess decks, and a far third, the wardroom.

Served months on the USS Independence. Work goes on 24 hours a day, more than just one mess hall, so it's eat when you can. Eating in shifts would be mission impossible.

Nothing like beef stew on rice, or for mid rats, chicken patties, rice and corn.

Like every one has said, there was something available 23 hours a day, but that doesn't mean you really wanted it.

Was on the Nimitz, Saratoga, Stennis and Ike (along with a few CQ Dets on the America and Roosevelt). When the Airwing was aboard, you could get something most of the time, though some of the stuff made box lunches look like a four course meal.

I watched that show! It was great! Some of the things I knew about and some things I learned for the first time. Seemed to be excellently done!

Sailors don't lose weight because of the food, for sure. This here one sure didn't. All underway ships are on a 24 hour schedule, but not usually as hectic as a carrier

I didn't "serve" on a carrier, but I conducted ops on CVA-14 (TICONDEROGA), CORAL SEA, MIDWAY, CV-59 thru CV-67 to include CVN-65, CVN-68 thru CVN-75, several LHAs, and two foreign aircraft carriers. Officer's mess only.

Food was always good, when you had time to eat.
It would suck standing in line and they called general quarters.

Food was always available basically around the clock, also you could get junk food in the ships store. I have to say we were fed pretty good, especially on the steak, shrimp and lobster days.

For times when there isnt a full crew aboard the mess operates at a reduced schedule.

On the Nimitz we did have some food available 23 hrs a day...during regular meal times all the lines were open, but during off times only one or two were. Food was actually decent most of the time. Have a lot of great memories while underway.

What time frame did you serve on Midway? I was on USS Worden CG-18 1975-1976 out of Yokusuka. We escorted Midway often, usually as ATC and anti-aircraft/sub defense.

One of the carriers I served on is a coral reef. We didn't have no 24 hour chow, back in the days. You ate at specific times, and only during those times. If you missed chow, you had to wait until the next meal period. If you missed evening chow, you had to wait until mid-rats, which was usually left over hamburgers and hotdogs. Occasionally cold pizza, but that was about it until breakfast, for night check.

I was on the Curts in Yokosooka too, with the mighty midway battle group late 80s thru desert storm. Black shoe all the way though, no bird farms for me.
