Anyone with the 411?

The merge at the bridge will be a nightmare. People down here don't understand "zipper merge". I can see more road rage incidents.

View attachment 108146 Yes, there is a shopping center in the works. FDR will be extended across 4 towards Wildewood and will tie into 235 north of the 4/235 intersection at the Wildewood condos turn in. FDR will actually tie into the back of the parking area where the condos are. Entrance to the shopping center will be via that FDR extension. Currently a grocery store and pharmacy will anchor the shopping center, with a bank and restaurant plus a few retail store tossed in...

Where did you find this?

I got the info and pic from an email. The email was the result of land being sold for FDR and part of the shopping complex.

As far as the pic and how things are oriented, the bottom right corner where you see a little bit of road is 235. The left side of the pic is rt 4, and the top of the pic is FDR extension.

Thanks. Was there any mention of a timeline?

Last I saw, they were bickering on the shopping center over some right of ways. It was also not approved once because the grocery store would have been Food Lion relocating from Laurel Glenn. The commissioners did not want a new shopping center to take an anchor store from another one. Rumor is the drug store is a Walgreens. I think that is true as CVS seems to be set in Hollywood.

Any comments/reviews on the newly opened merge lane from rt. 235 onto rt. 4 north?

People here don't know how to merge. They are still blocking the intersection as everyone tries to get into the left lane, while there's almost a mile of right lane open. Works great for people like me who understand that it's okay to use that lane up to the merge.

Just image what a mile long zipper merge could accomplish. Not as much as an automated ejection system that used a giant paddle to flip you off the bridge if you dropped below 45mph......... but still.

If everyone used the lanes as they were designed and intended then there would be no benefit to those travelling over the bridge. The only thing it would do is move some of the traffic off of 235 and free it up for those not going over the bridge.

people use the lanes according to their own "rules". That's the problem with most of the traffic. Part of that reason sits with the state, they don't mark or let their intent be known, and LE doesn't enforce those rules.

Most people who quote the "zipper merge" don't understand what they are talking about and just use the term to justify their inconsiderate driving.

The zipper merge is the most effective when two independent lanes are merging into one lane. The key here is independent lanes, with traffic from separate sources. If you have the same source and you separate traffic only to re-merge later, then you are not somehow gaining efficiency, that's not how physics works. You are personally gaining at the expense of everyone who does not. And if exactly half the people did it you still would be slightly worst off. The most effective method is no merger at all, a single lane with no starting/stopping to accommodate a merge. The closest approximation we have with multiple streams from one source merging to fewer streams is to merge before traffic comes to a standstill and someone has to arrest their forward movement to accommodate a merger.

So if you whip out of line and zoom up a turn lane you are not zippering, you are azholering. And if you are warned 500 ft before a lane ends and you don't take the next available merger without causing someone to hit their breaks you are attempting to decrease your own time at a slightly greater loss to everyone else and in the end causing a greater overall slowdown.

Well, given traffic coming east from Rt 4 and traffic turning east from NB235, that is two different directions, and now they have two lanes to zipper with.

For that specific instance I agree, however I was responding to the general "people don't understand zipper merge" comment, which is typically used to justify passing on the right using a turn lane and then forcing re-entry into the straight lane.
