Posting for a friend that lives in the area.

Looking for ANYTHING to do with middle school aged kids in the SOMD area. Seems like the only things to do in the area involve drinking/bars and or paying $100 to paint at a workshop.

Ideas appreciated. Thanks!

Then can make TikTok videos starting fights at Basketball games. Or...
They can make videos of the lil Angels jumping & beating up fellow students. Or...
They can attend Weekend "Whitey is keeping us down!!" celebrations in St. Mary's Square. Or...
They can attend Weekend "Whitey can't keep us down!! We strong & independent!!" celebrations at the AA memorial.

And the parents can participate in ANY of these family fun events....

What happened to letting kids go outside and play and make up their own games, build tree forts in the woods, experiment with a magnifying glass burning leaves, building ramps to ride your bike over to see how high you could jump, picking up cans out of the ditch for extra spending money, playing TACKLE football with the neighborhood kids, fighting with the neighborhood kids then making up the next day, grabbing a cat by it's tail and seeing how far you can sling it, playing in the straw barn, making things with tobacco sticks only to be beaten with them later? So many things to do in Southern Maryland for kids of all ages!

Vegetable guys like Trossbachs is always looking for kids in the summertime to pick peaches and tomatos, but for some reason, parents today think little johnny is too good for that type of work. Well - it builds character and stamina, which kids these days are lacking.

I grew up doing all of those things except for the cat slinging, that is pretty much borderline Jeffery Dahmer.

Both my dad and his younger brother worked on shade tobacco farms near where they lived in western Mass. when they were teenagers.

Middle school is of course, the perfect age for Scouts. While my son was in - and BTW, he made Eagle last year! - there was NEVER any shortage of things to do - in a good troop, there's stuff to do all the time. Usually there was so much to do, he had to pick which events to NOT go to.

Now my son is also a participant in Special Olympics - while your kid might not be special needs, many sports (and they are year round) - can use volunteers to act as unified partners. Since the pandemic, S.O. of St Mary's County has lost volunteers and some sports need them. The great thing about volunteering with special needs persons in sports is - you DON'T NEED TO BE GOOD at it! You just need a big heart.

My kids when they were in middle school also participated in sports and tae kwon do (which isn't free, of course, but you can attend several times a week, and you can even join, yourself).

Have them learn a trade skill. Build a garden with them. Have them do something real with their hands that produces, rather than teaching them to be consumers.
