Are Southern MD'ers southerners?

Both my parents are from St. Mary's Co (and all of my ancestors on both sides were too--when doing some geneology I realized I was the first one in my lineage on both sides to have been born out of the county), but I grew up in Brandywine. I never thought I had any accent at all until I lived in upstate NY for a time, when I got lots of "you sound so southern" comments. I remember once I told a friend I was cooking chicken and dumplings for dinner and she cracked up, saying "you are SO southern!" I was like, huh? I am? I have to say growing up where I did I never thought of us as being southern, just more rural I guess.

My dad did have the distinctive St. Mary's County accent, and it's comforting when I hear it since it reminds me of him. My mother does not, but she grew up down here just like him.

i SAY...i SAY...

since I've got a "drawl", such as we call it, i suppose I'll concede...

I'm a southerner...

...and that was CONcede, not SEcede....we tried that already and it was quite a debacle.

:smib: :huggy:

I'm from the midwest. I had a friend from Colorado try and tell me HE was from the midwest because he said it was the "middle of the west". Of course, he's wrong. Illinois to Nebraska is the midwest.

Maryland is neither the north nor the south. It's the mid-Atlantic.

When I went back to California, after having been here for 20+ years, my high school friends said I had an accent and spoke southern......I never thought I did.

I lived in NC for 8 years before moving to MD, and was teased mercilessly about my southern accent. To this day, I am still soft spoken (acquired when trying not to draw attention to myself ), although my accent is long gone.

When I go back to Nebraska they all say I have an accent, but not southern. It's more of that east coast "omigod!!!" accent.

Everyone can agree that there is a southern accent, as well as New Yawk and New England. Californians don't think they have an accent, they just think everyone else is wrong. My question is: Is there an "American" accent, and if so, which one is it?

I vote for the California accent, since that's what you hear on TV and Radio. Anyone who talks with a regional accent is automatically labelled as a hick.
