I never had much luck with artis in the campfire, but I can make a mean mickie (fire roasted potato). My dad was from Brooklyn, and he told me stories exactly like this one:

Not sure why we don't eat them more often.
We eat them every time the market has good ones that are fresh and big. If they're skinny and ugly I ignore them. Today's find was a nice surprise.

PS, the Instant Pot makes steaming artichokes a breeze. Trim them, then put a cup of water* in the bottom of the pot, pressure cook on high for 12 minutes, let the steam release for 5 mins or so, then eat.

* I put seasoning and lemon juice in with my steamer water. Tonight I used the Zoe's Kitchen Greek seasoning.
