First off. extra powder isn't the answer.. the 9mm round is already too fast, making it faster out of the barrel makes it a worse round, not a better round.
Compared to the .45 the 9 is at about 1200 - 1300 fps, the .45 about 800 - 900.. so being that the .45 already has better stopping power, the velocity isn't something that needs to be fixed. Adding powder is just a waste of money, and make the gun just that much harder to control (ie, the chances are reduced for the much needed placement of the 2nd and 3rd round that we KNOW you'll need to hit the target with)
The "soft" tip may help a little bit, but still won't give it near the capability of a .45.
With the low velocity, the weight of the round the .45 will stop whatever it is you are shooting it at, and the round itself has limited penetration.. meaning the chance of shooting through your drywall, and your neighbors drywall and shooting your neighbor with an errant round are much decreased..
So NO, the 9mm is not a preferred home/ self defense weapon.
Wow...a caliber war on the Southern Maryland Forums!
I wanna play.
This is a classic fast/light, slow/heavy debate in that you seem to suggest that because the 9mm is not a subsonic round, it somehow makes it less effective.
After all is said and done, it's not about caliber but about load selection and shot placement. 9mm, 40 S&W, 45 ACP are all about equal despite what each says about their chosen caliber. With todays bullet technology, the likes of Gold Dot, HST, and SXT Talon, all are about equal in effectiveness.....for a handgun round.
Over penetration is a function of bullet expansion, not speed. FMJ does not expand, quality HP's do.
Given a choice between 45 ACP and 9mm were it just FMJ as the only option, you might favor 45 ACP, although from a tactical battle field stand point, 9mm has been proven to penetrate soft targets a bit more.
In the end it's still about shot placement and load selection.....and yes...available rounds.
Given the choice between 8-13 rounds of 45 ACP, 12-15 rounds of 40 S&W, or 16+ rounds of 9mm......
Don't ever discount the merits in the ability to place rounds on target with the shootability of 9mm. It's fine and even a desired attribute for self defense.
For me, 40 S&W with lots of rounds and even more effectivenes over 9mm...and yes most 45 ACP loads.
I like 45 ACP's......have several of those nice target guns.
Your correct concerning the development of the 45ACP from the military's experience in the Philippines insurrection with the 38 Long Colt.
The 9mm and 40 S&W far exceed anything the 38 Long Colt ever had.
