Calvert Deputy Critically Injured
DUNKIRK --- A Calvert County deputy was critically injured early today when he apparently lost control of his police car, or perhaps fell asleep and went off the edge of Rt. 4 near the Dunkirk Animal Hospital at Brickhouse Road.
"The accident took place at about 4 am and we are praying for our officer," Calvert Sheriff Mike Evans told ST. MARY'S TODAY, who identified the deputy as John Coates, who has been on the department for about a year, serving prior to that as a county correctional officer.
Sheriff Evans said that Coates was off-duty and headed southbound on Rt. 4 when his vehicle left the roadway at about 4 am.
There were no passengers in the police car and there is no reason to suspect foul play of any kind, according to the Sheriff. Coates was flown to Baltimore Shock Trauma where Evans said he was getting good care but that they are very concerned about him. Coates has a five-year-old son and is married.
Next to violence from the public during domestic situations and serving warrants, most injuries to police officers occur on the highway.
