Yes, deer eat lead from being shot with it. Dont care if it is what it is, they are wounded/killed with a piece of lead "shot" at them by a human from a weapon of some fashion.
Deer dies, eagles eat and digest lead.
Hunters field dress deer and leave guts, etc in the field which animal eat and ingest the lead shot. ( it is now broken into small pieces after impact)

Folks STILL use lead because we are still getting in sick birds.
You disagree AND call my post "BS" ..then contact Tri-State Bird Rescue in Newark Deleware and ASK.
Contact the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Assoc and ask for stats.
Contact Raptor Center, Univ. of Minn. ask them and call their info BS!

From an article, In fact, of the 29 bald eagles admitted last year, only one survived the lead poisoning to be released back into the wild.

Eagles are NOT protected by the state of Maryland. They come under the protection of the USF&W, and all eagles are governed by USF&W, not DNR! Maryland is obligated to abide by and work with USFW, which they do. And to work with them you need a permit ( Migratory Bird Laws) from them..I have such a permit. To house them, you need an additional special permit,( which I do not have because there are facilities near by with vets on staff to care for these birds) and sometimes DNR can grant permission after clearing it with USFW ( because "DC" is right next door) So, yes, I do what I am talking about.



How do you hunt deer...club them with a stick or look at them and scare them to death?
You SHOOT them, thus they have been SHOT with a projectile!
The majority of these "projectiles" are made of LEAD.
Understand?
They get shot with lead and get poisoning from lead shot.
How hard is that for you to understand?
Once the lead is in the body, we do not care in what form it entered, lead is lead and it kills.

Did you two read my post????? the deer was in the road...a local state trooper witnessed 10 or so bald eagles in the road eatting on it...so HE PULLED THE DEER INTO THE FIELD ..so the eagles were safe to eat off of it...

On April 5, 2010 the bald eagle was removed from Maryland’s list of threatened and endangered species. This is a great success story. The bald eagle was also removed from the federal endangered species list in August 2007. Removal from these official lists is a result of the tremendous recovery of this former endangered species. The bald eagle population is now fully recovered. Bald eagles are regularly seen throughout Maryland, especially near the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal rivers.

Baja, what happens to that slug AFTER is enters the body?
Think it stays in one nice rounded shape?
Where do you aim? Vital organs, heart, lung.
After you field dress, what do you do with the entrails? Most just leave it behind for the animals to eat.
Where is that lead slug now?
On the ground, in the waste, waiting for an animal to ingest and pass on thru the food chain.

It does not take much lead to poison and kill a small animal.

OK sorry I am sick was in the ER most of the night...and pretty out of it right now....probably should not even be trying to think right now.....yeah thats large in a 12 gage what a bout a 20 gage? I have a Belgin made browning A5 as my weapon of choice but I dont deer hunt only pheasant and chucker......and I use a bird shot and I have eaten alot of pellets myself...lol in my rabbit and pheasant meat

You have any idea WHY the eagle was removed? Not because it was the idea of the biologists, it was from pressure of politicians. It was about property owners not being able to develop their property because of the presence of eagle nests.

Oh NP Paso. She's lost on terminology and trying to fool everyone that eagles are dropping dead everywhere from eating "shot" when it just isn't true. In fact if you google like she suggested, the only thing that comes up is Minnesota. Took me awhile to find anything on MD.

Lead is legal for woodland game. Sure an eagle can eat a lead infected bird/animal but it RARELY happens. I'm sick of misinformation being used to harm hunting and will call them out on it.

We are bigger and can handle lead. But look at all the buildings that contained lead based paint and the problems that is still causing!

Ask our "friend" about birds of prey and lead poisoning, she is much more of an expert, and I have learned much from her. Also have gone out on rescues for her and "him" picking up eagles, where the dx was toxic poisoning.
I believe another rehabber was looking into the cost of buying a lead tester so we would know right away instead of having to transport 1-2 hours away now that Gerda is gone. Most go to Tri-State Bird rescue in Deleware. It is a very expensive to treat an animal for lead poisoning!

Katelin, I think the "shots" (as in photos) look awesome. I love the fact eagles aren't that rare to see like they used to be. I see them all the time around that area, just never have my camera with me. Even with the smaller lens you were able to create a great scene/story with these shots. I'm not sure what camera you use, but with today's DSLR you should be able to crop it and still print it to a good size for display.

Wild Heart Ranch's bald eagle rescue

This is the Facebook page of Wild Heart Rescue in Oklahoma that recently rescued an eagle with lead poisoning.
Please take time to read it and understand the nature of lead poisoning in wildlife.
So far, their eagle is making progress!
Nice that they are doing on line documentation.
Eagle flight pens are so important. One reason we don't always get our eagles back to release where they came from is that we do not have a pen to fly them in as they recover and get stronge..
One rehabber in St. Marys is trying to build one, but they are expensive!

One was shot and would not survive, the other, Miracle is being treated still.

Veterinarians believe she's suffering from lead poisoning, something not uncommon when it comes to birds of prey.

"They're scavengers. They'll eat ducks and other birds that are shot. They may scavenge off of caucuses or a deer that's been shot. Lead is very toxic, so just a small amount ingested could kill an eagle," said Dr. Kay Backues, Tulsa Zoo Veterinarian.

Actually, believe it or not, there is a map for hummingbird migration sightings HERE
They arrive when there is a reliable food supply to support the adults and the babies. In addition to nectar, they eat bugs! Check out the map...they will be here!!! Also plant some stuff hummers like. Butterfly bush is great!!
Actually, if you Google "Hummingbird Migration 2012" several sites come up with good maps!

I looked up some of these sites. Very interesting and helpful. I've sent the info to some friends who also feed hummers. Thanks.
