Spending the day with my nieces on Saturday what do we see in plain view while driving but a dead headless deer on the side of the road. My 2 nieces ages 3 and 6 were just screaming and asking me all kinds of questions as to why there was a dead deer on the side of the road with no head. And if that was not enough later that same day we were headed South on 235 when right on the side of the road, almost to the Exploration buildings stands a guy in camouflage holding a deer's head in one head and was sawing with a hacksaw with the other either at the antlers or the head. Now that sight really got the 1 niece screaming. Bad enough the barbaric redneck in his little red Dodge Neon wanted a trophy but to do it on the side of the road in plain view for those little girls to see just really P***ed me off! So to the dumb*** I saw and all the others out there who do this have enough common courtesy to do it where little kids and others do not have to fall witness!!

I have never seen anyone standing at the side of the road cutting a deer's head off. more less infront of the office bldg.

Maybe next time you should stay home. They seem to be following you.

I don't know why one deer would be headless, but the guy on 235 was probably cutting the antlers off of a road kill deer to use for "rattling". Explain that the deer was killed by a car and there would be less of this if hunting quotas were raised.

Just coming out of your Post Traumatic Shock to post about it now?

Personally, hacksaw or not, I would've had to alert the sheriff's dept, drop the nieces off, then return to make a confrontation. I'm not adverse to hunting and such, but if that site and activity was so ridiculously horrific and not sportsman-like, then a forum posting won't curb the behavior.

It was not in front of the building first of all, second of all this was my first experience seeing something like this and lastly it is very unfortunate that anyone should have to see it.

Thanks. I tried to explain as best I could for their age. What is rattling by the way?

You should have stopped and asked what he was doing and if you could watch, you know turn it into an educational experience for yourself and your nieces instead of the horrible traumatic one that it was.

:yeahthat:

And, that does sound like a reasonable thing to do for the kids' sake. I think I would come UNGLUED if I saw something like that.

That when you knock two antlers, or a substitute, together to simulate the sound of two bucks fighting. It will hopefully draw another buck in to see what is going on.

Hopefully there will not be a next time but if so then I will call the sheriffs department and atleast report it. Yeah posting here was just probably more to vent then to strike awareness cause I am sure most of those guys do not read the forums anyway.

That's interesting. So bucks are actually curious enough to see what is going on? I never knew that.

I don't know bout that one! Seeing a head of a deer being sawed on - on the side of 235 - would be pretty horrible.

Probably would stick with you all right. For some reason when I was in eighth grade we took a field trip to our local slaughter house. We went from the yard with the mooing cows, up the ramp where they killed them and into the room where they were hung up, bled and cut up. I still remember the smells and the floor running with blood.

Well, if two bucks are fighting it's about a doe. Guess what the
non-combatant thinks he could get away with while the other
two are fighting? Right, the doe. :lmao:

I didn't realize it was illegal to cut off a deer's head.....

What would the cops do about it? I'm sure the deer got hit by a car, and the person wanted to mount the head or get the antlers. I've sawed antlers off a buck that I came across that was already dead. I have no problem with hunting....deer don't have any natural predators in St. Mary's County...so the population has to be controlled somehow.

I am all for humane treatment of animals...but as long as the hunters are using the deer (meat), then it's fine.

Animals4life-just curious, are you a vegetarian or vegan? If not, you know that the meat you eat doen't just come from the grocery store all nice and packaged. It was an animal once too.

Well, I guess bring on the red!
