Cheaply made and inexpensive would seem to go hand in hand..

And personally, on two wheels, cheaply made is not something I would consider.

If it's cheaply made and inexpensive I would think no thought had been put into the building of the bike or the handling. How would it react in an emergency stop from 70mph? If I hit a pothole at 45, will I still be able to maintain control? If you roll it over does it have BIC stamped on the underside?

For the price/engine size the Rebel seems much better made. They tried to make the Thunder/Pony look like a full sized bike.

Honda would my choice between the two. Cheap or not, that bike has been around a LONG time, and seems to handle well enough.

Don't think they're designed for cross country touring, more like riding down to the corner bar.
... but I think I'd rather do 100 miles on a Vento than on a $40k custom chopper

Yep, when I said 70 MPH didn't realize it was a 250, but potholes can get you anywhere. Former BIL was doing 35 on his bike on a neighborhhood street, hit a pothole and it sent him right onto a Telephone Junction Box on the side of the road, he now has an internal titamium 'mask' that holds his face together.

There is a lady who comes to our shop who has a Vento. She loves it. We haven't had to do any work on it except a few extras she wanted. I liked how it was light and such. It was nice. JMO. I have been on the Sportster, but it's sort of heavy. I didn't feel as trusting with it. I have seen many bikes come and go through the shop, so I am sort of doing homework on which one I like the most. I need something that isn't as heavy as the Sportster, so....not many options. And I don't want a sport bike. I like the look of the Vento, would be willing to go with something else if it looked the same and was light like it.

I have a 250 Rebel I have not yet advertised with less than 2500 miles on it, if you want a learning bike. I love it, but I moved up. Fun little bike with a lot of extras. PM me if you are interested. I already have someone looking to buy it, but she wants to make payments and that is not an option.

So, maybe I am reconsidering this whole, I want a bike of my own thing...:ohwell:

I haven't read the entire thread. Have you taken the safety course or do you already know how to ride?

I am taking it in the Spring, hopefully the first course in the spring. I was going to do it last year, but had issues with my should, so never made the classes. Shopping around right now, trying to figure out what will be the best to start with that I can handle.

it's only 3 days of classroom and 2 days of driving(I think)

I took it up at AACC and even with the drive it wasn't that bad at all

I am hoping to take it at CSM, but am willing to go somewhere else for it. I am going to sign up as soon as they will take registration. I have sort of been a big chicken about taking it. I have studied for my learners and I need to take the test. Maybe will go do that in the next week of two. I am excited about doing it. Especially when I see more and more women out there riding, makes me feel like I can do it.

Better sign up as soon as you can. The classes fill up quick. I took it at La Plata and did my "road time" off of Radio Station Road. It was really fun.

You can do it!....and you don't need your learners to take the class....They go over everything and when you pass the written and driving parts, you get to go down to the MVA and get that pretty M on your license
