Betty Russell's Bar in Valley Lee

Hmm. Depends on what you mean by "familiar"....
The BF used to hang out there on occasion after softball - years and years ago. Still goes there once in a while. Anyhoo long story short, there was a Betty Russell in the obits recently and I was wondering if it was the same Betty Russell. "Familiar" because someone would probably have to know the owners to know if it was the same person or not.

That's one of the only bars left of the once very many here on 249. I once owned the largest of them all..but there were a half dozen at least...

Chief's, Tall Timbers (back when it was a night club with bands), Tall Timbers Tavern, Oakwood Lodge, Elsie D's, Old Country Inn, HappyLand, Swann's

Tall Timbers (back when it was a night club with bands), Tall Timbers Tavern,
Came down here in the late 60s with a buddy of mine's band. All I remember was it was Tall Timbers, stage and big dance floor in front. Think Ken said that place was turned into a house. Came down a couple times, last time the lead singer didn't like what the crowd(sailors) was requesting and said 'Bite my crank, mateys'...and then the fun began..:)

I remember several of those, although I didn't go to them all. Oakwood Lodge did have the delicious Black Diamond steaks. Gridiron had them for awhile. I fortunately have the recipe for that.

I LOVE Chiefs. It's exactly my kind of place; good food, ice cold Blue Moon w/the orange slice thingy, nice drive to get there from my house, good comfortable local crowd, the waitresses always remember us, it's dark enough to get a good view of the stars on the way out - just the most perfect place in the world.

I can picture you running that, you have the right personality for it. Wish I could have seen it back in the day - think I was still in the Navy. Used to drive by the turn off - it was off 301 wasn't it...Swann's Point?

What is directly across the road from Chief's? Lee's mentioned that probably a half dozen times as where he got his first underage beer. Looks closed.

Swann's resort was directly across the road in Piney Point from the post office that gave up my address....you bein that persuasive...
Wow I was way off wasn't I? I could probably swim there and find it, I have a tendency to wander off when I drive.
