BIG Car chase in PG into DC

This is the first BIG chase I heard in a long time!

A chase is always good listening to on a scanner, now that CCSO has camera's in their cars, some of the video is really great if you have opportunity to see. Couple of summers ago several bad guys in stolen pickup truck, truck-jacked another truck with trailer and 2 ATV's on the back, pulled gun on about 3 guys getting some food at Randy's in Hughesville took truck headed north on 5 and out Mattawomen toward, low and behold PG County, well a CC Officer got behind it in Forrest Park and the chase was on (Sunday afternnon about 4pm) that chase went all the way into DC, near Fort Dupont Park before it ended, the trailer tires went flat on Mattawomen from stopsticks, the trailer is swaying back and forth one ATV comes loose is hanging over the side of the trailer, the stolen truck that they came in is in the front of the truck and trailer just after Brandywine rd on 5 that truck crosses over the median and is going north in the southbound lanes cars going everywhere that bad guy then bails out and off into the woods, the other truck with the AVTs continues north on 5, just past Moores Rd the ATV explodes into flames from ruptured gas tank, bad guy continues on fire goes out and eventually up by Iverson Mall it finally falls from the trailer. The guy continues on turns on Southern Ave out to Suitland Rd through Farifax Village and out Alabama Ave and down some side road where he bails runs up a hill MSP and CCSO officers on foot pursuit guns drawn and runs right into a big block party at a apartment complex which includes DC Police Officers, needless to say he was caught. I was able to see the video of this chase it was like something you would see on COPS.

It's possible, but is it reasonable to develop the capability to counter an extremely rare problem? How often do we actually have chases that last more than 5-10 minutes?

You have to factor in the time to get the right people to the bird, the bird into the air, to the chase, and set up the shot. By that time they've usually crashed.

...pizz away so much money on useless things, why not have a capability along those lines?

Sure, the capability in and of itself is expense, but for anyone who already has helicopters and officers, then we're talking augmentation. We're only talking about adding 3-4 personnel per machine who are qualified to pull the trigger. Call it $50k each person per year, so, $200,000. Training time and resources, a couple 100k on top of that per year? I'd compare that to lawsuits where the cops get in trouble for pursuing, plus the costs associated with only one nasty chase per year; property damage, injuries, loss of innocent life, roadway damage, etc.

How much, I wonder, did today's chase cost? How many officers were involved? How much damage? What is the cost of their regular patrols going wanting for an hour or two and being out of position?

I know my cousin was excited about the chase. He works for the state tropers as a dispatcher, but got to go on a ride along. Well he got one hell of a ride along!
