I can't find any place in the MD vehicle law book that says where your front plate has gotta be, as long as it's visible from the front.

13-411 of the Transportation code.
On a vehicle for which two registration plates are required, one plate shall be attached on the front and the other on the rear of the vehicle.
For definition purposes, "front" in this statute means the furthest, forward portion of the exterior of the vehicle.

13-411 (c) (2) How plates are to be fastened: In a horizontal position, securely fastened to the vehicle for which it was issued. It shall also be fastened in a place and position clearly visible.

Laying on the dashboard is (a) not attached
(b) not on the front (its in the passenger
compartment of the vehicle)
(c) not clearly visible (glare, darkness, and angle)
Its not enough that you can see a white
square, the letters and digits must be
clearly visible.

I believe this is what you were looking for. I hope it helps.

Yes, it helps. I've been caught three times without a front plate.

1st time - I told the officer somebody tried to take it

2nd time - I had it visible on the windshield, but the officer didn't see it. He let me go once he saw it though.

3rd time - I got a fine while sitting at the toll by the Nice bridge.

Okay, thanks. I missed that one. I guess that sitting on the dashboard behind the windshield would not be legal, then.

I'm finally giving in ang getting a bracket for the damn plate. I've been pulled over I $hit you not probably 10 times for not having the front tag on the car (it is in the windshield). I've only gotten one ticket for it and that was instead of the speeding ticket he coulda given me so I was happy to take it. None of the base cops have EVER said a word to me but one and I avoid him like the plague because he told me the last time he saw me that the next time he saw me without it affixed to my car that he was giving me a ticket. :jameo: The car goes in the shop as soon as I can get either B or my momma to met me over there to pick me up. :frown:

I drove from St. Mary's to Annapolis and back this afternoon and didn't see ONE speed trap. The only person I saw pulled over was right before the bridge in Solomons. It was the ding-dong in the red Dodge Ram pickup who passed me like a bat out of hell about a mile earlier.

Right before the bridge in Solomons is a very nice place to put a speed trap. They pick up lotsa "paying customers" there. Mostly ding-dongs in large vehicles drag-racing to beat each other to merge onto the bridge. The winner gets a coupon for an expensive visit to the courthouse.
