I love the debate, but I would've preferred it to be between a black person and a white person. Opio is fighting a battle that's not her own IMO.
For the record, I don't see anything wrong with the fact that Imus said what he said ONLY because people say what they want out of their mouths all day everyday. However, I don't like that anyone has ugly feelings towards anybody else but it happens and those feelings belong to the person feeling them. He may owe his company and the sponsors an apology but if he said it, he feels it and there is no need to apologize for being yourself.
As far as Al and Jesse goes, I don't think they do a good job of protesting in the media against rappers and record labels who produce music that is degrading to black people. However, I don't know their efforts to say they DON'T do anything at all. Do, I feel there is a double standard when it comes to the battles Al and Jesse take on, yes and no. Yes, because there are black people doing the same things they preach against to each other but no because that's what the cause they fight for is about so to expect them to just turn their heads when something comes up is ridiculous. It's like expecting God to turn his head when a sin he hates is committed. But, I stand that if the N word is used, or any racist remarks are made that whoever makes them no matter what the race is or what race its about the water should hold the same weight.
And for the record, black people are not the only race who speaks ugly about each other. It's because black people especially Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have not forgotten what went on in the 50s and 60s so if you think they are just going to close their ears it won't happen. However, when they are both no longer on the earth there probably won't be many left to argue the point. So, it would be more successful for each one to reach one and teach one than to fight a battle alone that way it ensures that in the future we as black people will not forget who we are so that we don't accept anyone calling us those things which we are not. I would love to see more people walking with Al and Jesse to tackle the entire negativity against black people mainly from black people. Because THAT is what is going to put an end to the rest of it. Start at home...
