Bmi

BMI is more or less a statistical device to measure "fatness" against the average population. It doesn't establish "fatness" against a biological definition but a statistical one. And obviously, there will be outliers in such cases.

It isn't meant to measure fatness in such cases, such as athletes who have enormous, dense muscles. Think of it more as a tool in measuring how fat an individual is who's already clearly overweight without reference to body fat index - because BMI is an easy equation, while body fat takes a little more work to conclude (and ALSO makes a few assumptions about the body measured).

I'm trying for a really low number right now. I think I'm sitting around 8 - 8.5%. I'd like to get below 5%

Why? Get too lean and it causes problems. The body requires a certain percentage to do things like make hormones. Seriously, find a chart to find out what's healthy.

That garbage calculator said 20.2 BTW, my BF% is about 7-8%

BMI is meant for inactive people. Not for folks with some amount of muscle.
My BMI is 33.4.

I take no stock in BMI. My BF% is 15%. I eat WHATEVER I want. I train 5+ days/week.

I'm happy. F@#$ BMI

The problem with BMI calculations is that it makes an assumption of someone’s health based solely on their height and weight. Although BMI calculation may be accurate for someone that lives a sedentary lifestyle, Bodybuilders are the ones that really get punished the most by the results. (the web)

From Bodybuilding.com:
"There really is no reason powerlifters should be fat (having a body fat percentage of 18% or more) because optimum nutrition is a big part of the game. Just like bodybuilders, large amounts of protein are needed and clean carbohydrates should be timed perfectly. I don't care who you are or what you do; if your diet is not perfect, you are not anywhere near optimal performance."

There seems to be this popular misconception that if you want to train heavy (like a powerlifter) a decent diet is unimportant.

Hey genius, the thread here is about BMI not diet. My BF% happens to be in a healthy range. Right where I need it to be. I have found what works for me. I never said diet wasn't important either. It depends on your goals and what helps you achieve those goals.
I am a powerlifter. Take a look at the Elite level powerlifters sometime. I love how people (who have never lifted a heavy weight in their life) dispense stuff like this. I eat it up (with butter!). Keep feeding me this great information!
