Brown Recluse?

Here is a clearer picture. I think it looks more like a coffee bean than a fiddle!
or a fiddle resting on a coffee bean.

I am assuming the "fiddle" is referiig to the shape of the cephalothorax (head portion) being smilar to the lower bout of a fiddle?

Great pic btw- thank you.

I didnt think the brown recluse was native to maryland but I could be wrong.

They (whoever "they" happen to be) said we didnt have Hobo spider either, yet ive seen two myself at the Southern Community Center right after they treated for insects.

They are not native, no. But, they are here and I know a gentleman down at the boat yard in Solomons that got bit by one....

Just wondering if it looks like one.

They usually travel here in packages. They supposedly will not survive the winter here outdoors, but if they are in the house they can survive. If you are fortunate to get a mating pair, look out.

I wouldn't try to get rid of the spiders, I would be loooooong gone.

Yes, to put it mildly, the Brown Recluse gets the blame a lot of times for what the Hobo spider does to people after a bite. Theyre quite lethal. I didnt know what they were at the time and people were all around them including two small children, so I stomped them and looked them up later, I was in shock!

ok Now I'm tripping out over hobo spiders...so I researched it. Found a website pdf that explains how to identify what is NOT a hobo spider...

http://pep.wsu.edu/pdf/PLS116_1.pdf
If you have a hand lens…. - what is NOT a hobo spider
If the only magnifying device you have is a hand lens, you may have to be satisfied with knowing what is not a hobo spider.

...1- Spots on the sternum? Not a hobo

Uhhh...No way in hell am I going to flip the spider over and look at it's sternum!!

This has some good info:
Hobo Spider Management Guidelines--UC IPM
HoboSpider.com- Poisonous Hobo Spider and Brown Recluse Spider Information and Big H Spider Traps.

It does not show that any live in Maryland.

The texas jumping spider will jump on you from up to 6 feet away. In maryland the like to hide ontop of cabnets and other high spots, then leap on their prey as they walk by. I dont know if you have any down your way.

6 feet, holy crap, like that move aracnophobia. :cds:

The local home I know of obviously had a breeding pair - probably several breeding pairs after a bit of time. They seem to stay mostly in the basement (the ones that survive the pest control methods that is). The pest control folks put out traps to catch the spiders, which is how they identified them.

I have heard the "fiddle" comment too but I don't SEE it. On the website I linked it reads

and I still can't SEE it. Maybe it's because I am colorblind?

I am scared to death of spiders and because of that I make sure I can identify most of them, it helps me from freaking out like a 2 year old.

So remember this concerning spiders- Hairy spider is a good spider.

The only venomous spider listed in Maryland is the black widow. Although I have seen conflicting reports (none that look verifiable) concerning recluses. Even so, recluses are not hairy.

I attempted to highlight the fiddle but it did not work so well but I will try to post it any way encase it helps at all

I do fine with big white boxes... It's when the picture and video shows up that I have problems. :coffee:

Also... I think I am going to Annapolis on Saturday... Stopping at DSW :yahoo:
