Mine is scheduled for Monday, I'm wondering if anyone has had any experiences, this is my first child. He's breech and not moving, and doctor said even if he does move head down, it's going to be a c-section b/c my birth canal is too narrow...so... I'm seeking out feedback...what to expect...the good and not so good. THANKS !!

I had a c-section because he was also breech and also if he turn I was also to narrow. It's really no big deal. I was in the hospital 24 hours and requested to go home to be more comfortable. The next day I was out Christmas shopping. I would say the most painful part about a c-section is if you et your staples caught in your clothes... :killingme

:yeahthat: You will be up walking around within 24 hours... We stopped at the grocery store on our way home so I could do some last minute shopping... I remember the most painful part of a c-section being when the nurse had to "squeeze the grapefruit".... when she had to massage the uterus to get it to contract back into shape. :dead:

I've had two c-sections and one vaginal birth. I'd take the c-section over the 48 hours of labor and a forceps delivery any day. I won't lie, it hurts like hell the first few days, but the quicker you get up and moving, the quicker you'll get back to normal.

YAY !! I am SO not looking forward to staying in the hospital, I'm not fooling myself into thinking it won't be painful, but the thought of staying IN the hospital for me is DREADFUL... I wonder if I'll be able to opt to go home??

I'm sure after 24 hours your insurance company will be thrilled you want to go home. :buddies:

Don't over do it too much the first few days, and get sleep when the baby sleeps. Good luck! Enjoy that new precious baby and Congratulations.

My OB had informed me at my 39 week appt that I had a 50/50 chance of needing a c-section due to a narrow birth canal. After 30 hours of labor, things just weren't progressing. I had a c-section at that point. Let me tell ya.......if there's a next time for me, I'll automatically schedule the c-section. It was much less horrible than the labor was.

The recovery wasn't bad, just a little uncomfortable at times. I had my little man on a Tuesday morning, went home on Thursday morning. OB came in and told me I could leave that day, Fri or Sat. I asked her to put a rush on my discharge paperwork! :killingme

There is no way that your OB can tell you whether your baby will fit through your pelvis (unless you have a significant injury or suffered malnutrition during your growing years.) OB's have been using this tactic to scare Mom's into unnecessary interventions for years.

Cesarean Section increases your risk of dying in birth by THREE times over a vaginal birth. That being said, your risk is still very low though the US ranks 50th among industrialized countries for our (worsening) maternal mortality rate. In the US Breech delivery is no longer taught to OB's even though the rest of the world (including all of the countries that have better maternal and fetal outcomes) still regularly teach and support breach birth. Canada recently came out and said that vaginal breech delivery if safer for baby and mother than cesarean (but they do teach breech birth there, so I imagine that would not apply here in the US.) Cesarean Section the first time is pretty straight forward for most OB's, its the second, third and fourth that can be especially harmful to mother and baby (google placenta acreta, scarry stuff). If you desire a large family, I would recommend that you research the risks of C-Section and in the meantime try some exercises to turn your baby. You can find some information here:

Best Wishes for a good birth and easy recovery!

I just had a csection a month ago and as far as the staff/stay it was great the nurses were very kind and helpful but I'm not going to lie the pain was really bad it wasn't my first csection either so that might be why?I don't think they will let you leave early I think your required to stay at least 4 days because by the third day I wanted to go home and enjoy my son at home and be in my own bed but the nurse said nope ain't gonna happen until the fourth day... ?

Wow, that stinks. Guess I should've mentioned that I had my little boy at AAMC, not a Calvert Memorial. Maybe their guidelines are different? I'm sure if your insurance company wasn't willing to pay for the 4 days that they would've kicked you outta there.

I think the length of your stay greatly depends on your insurance... I have Carefirst Blue Cross/Blue Shield AND United Healthcare and went to the BC/BS website, and for Calvert Memorial, it says the "average" stay for a C-section is 3.2 days...

You are right "K"! If you have a good-paying Insurance, you get to stay longer. I think most C-Section people prefer to go home after 48 hours, and that's OK only IF the Mother is not running a fever, and as long as she is able to go to the Bathroom both ways.

I've had 2 c-sections - the first was an emergency one and the second was planned. The second was not nearly as bad as the first, but there is no way in hell that I would have been up shopping after 24 hours. There are so many factors that go into how you will react to the procedure - your age, your physical well being, etc. Good luck, and don't rush into going home. Take the time to get your rest.

dont forget that the husbands role becomes slave for the first few weeks after you come home. By then the nurse has already made sure he knows how to care for the baby and, if its the same nurse that my wife had, she will let the husband know that she is willing at any hour of the day to come to the home and beat the husband bloody if he fails to perform in a satisfactory manner.

A few tips - if you have stairs in your house and the bedrooms are upstairs, make sure you have some kind of "station" set up downstairs for you and baby. If you happen to have a bed that is fairly high, make sure you have some kind of step stool to help you get in and out. Some of the worst pain that I remember happened when getting in and out of bed.

I had a c-section at Calvert Memorial this past November. I healed rather quickly but I am not one of those people who can just sit there. The hospital made me stay for 3 days. I was hoping to go home after 2 but they said no. My c-section was not planned. I was induced 1 week early due to a large baby and never dilated past 4 so I had an urgent c-section. The doctor said there was no way she would have came out due to her broad shoulders. She was 9lbs 1oz.

The c-section itself hurt like hell. I can remember all of it. I don't think I will ever forget that pain. My case is not like most others though. They had me all doped up and ready to go and then there was a staffing issue. I ended u having to wait 2 hrs for shift change for the surgery. Well by that time because of all the meds I had already been given they could only give me so much more so I felt way much more than I should have. But given the choice I would take a c-section anyday. The recovery was so much faster.

I did like all of the staff at Calvert Memorial. They were great.

Hope everything goes good for you! Congrats!
