Anyone ever do it? I started this week..after the pregnancy and baby and the weight gain..my cardio ability has gone waaaaay down. I've never, ever been a runner but used to be able to hit the elliptical for 40-45 min or do tapes and it didn't bother me much at all...even though I have a touch of exercise induced asthma..now it's rough. I am not that much heavier (6 baby lbs to go yayyy) than I was..but I guess I got used to being a lazy fatty.

I got the app on my phone..I play pandora, and the app talks over my music to tell me when to walk or run (it starts with intervals and increases them week to week for distance) and gives me all kinds of fun stats..Its a little tough for me..but it wasnt HORRIBLE and I plan on continuing..I think my goal may be the warrior dash in may.:dye:

runners, this is a weird question..but how do you breathe? my body is never sore enough to stop me from running..but my breathing kills me everytime. I have read articles and tips..and thats what I think about the entire time I run..breathing enough and NOT in through my mouth..I know part of the throat closing, chest caving in feeling is the asthma issue..but theres gotta be a better technique..or is it one of those things that gets better with time?

I've ran most of my life. If I wasn't running I was doing some other cardio madness but I never could breathe through my nose. Not sure if it was sinus problems or what. Anywhoo. I was asthmatic as a kid and decided I was going in the military. I went for a run in December in Upstate NY and collapsed. The next day I collapsed a little farther down the road and so on. I beat my asthma to the point I was logging 40 miles a week and running half marathons on Fridays in my 20's. I end up having a rhythm between my stride and my breathing when I level out to a comfortable time. On a side note on Netflix is a movie called Running the Sahara and another one called Spirit of the Marathon both very inspirational. I also had the book "Born to Run" recommended to me but I haven’t got to it yet.

I naturally go to breathing through my mouth. But it hurts my throat, really bad. I try my best to breathe in through my nose and out through my mouth..but it usually ends up with me gasping for air:bigwhoop: and my throat bleeding. I have to think about breathing the entire time, which is kind of annoying. I am hoping it gets easier and I dont have to do that anymore ..

One of 2 things that come to mind, One you are not breathing properly when you are running or second, you are getting exerscise induced asthma. I never thought that was a diagnosis but I guess it is for some people when they do intense cardio.
Exercise-induced asthma

Are you running outside? If so put a scarf over your mouth it warms the air a bit and keeps the throat moist. They make a runners mask thingy but a scarf works. You can also chew gum and that will help. I end up stuffing it between my cheek and teeth so I don't choke but it helps. It will get easier. Maybe start a bit slower. You’re not racing and in a few weeks you will notice it's easier and then you can pick up the pace some. You could be a Zen runner. Someone who runs for the high and experience not for time.

Yeah, I am thinking I need a mask to keep the air moister..I learned the HARD way that when it is cold out to cover your ears. OUCH.

I am running so I can wear a pair of those teeny spandex running shorts they have at dicks  that, and I have always wanted to be able to do it, and look effortless.

sounds like Exercise induced asthma. I decided to run eventhough I HATE running and thought I should at least try and most importantly my son wants me to run with him. I found I was not breathing properly and that limited me in my distance. Now that I broke my toe and hurt my heel, running is on the back burner till I can start again.

This helped me with my breathing.

Make sure you're breathing more from your diaphragm, or belly, not from your chest -- that's too shallow. Deep belly breathing allows you to take in more air, which can also help prevent side stitches.

You should exhale through your mouth and try to focus on exhaling fully, which will remove more carbon dioxide and also help you inhale more deeply.

Here are a few more tips for breathing while running:

Try to take three footstrikes for every inhale, and two footstrikes for every exhale.
As a beginner, try to run at a pace at which you can breathe easily. Use the "talk test" to figure out if your pace is appropriate. You should be able to speak in full sentences, without gasping for air.
Slow down or walk if you're running out of breath. If you relax and slow the pace, breathing problems often take care of themselves. Don't overthink it!

...It took martial arts for me to learn to breathe like this. Before this, and all through grade school, I couldn't run worth a mile without hyperventilating.

It just wasn't taught, or at least not effectively

week 1 day 2 was still tough, but I think my breathing was a little better..I wasn't as winded and i brought a little bit of water along so my throat wasn't as sore..and I improved my time by about a minute over tuesdays run.

and it was a beautiful day to be out running :buddies:

its a great program, never got past week 4 myself... but hey even the run /walk intervals burn more calories than walking...

oh about the breathing, use your inhaler before you go, could be exercise induced asthma.

I read the secret to the breathing while running issue is to chew gum when you go! lol it works

ahhh also don't try to sprint... first weeks its best to do a slow jog, when i started I was trying to run too fast on the intervals... take your time better to make it thru the interval and speed will come later.

I have been running for over a month now..and I cannot believe how amazing it has been! I can now run farther than I have ever been able to do on my own, it has inspired me to make all kinds of healthy changes to my lifestyle, join a gym, the whole 9 yards. All thanks to this program and a smart phone app! I feel stronger, fitter, better..I haven't lost a ton of weight (I wasnt overweight to begin with, though) but I have lost inches all over and my freakin legs look so different..in just over a month they have become way more shapely and are starting to look like my ballet legs again :yahoo:

I love this program, best decision ever to start. If anyone is thinking about it, dooooo it.:dye:

Go you! I've dabbled in C25k but I noticed recently that my app has been renamed "Ease into 5k" and the intervals have changed a little. Maybe I'll start and actually take it seriously. Right now, this is me :lmao::
