California Passed A New Minimum Wage Bill. Now Chipotle Is Testing A Robotic Chip Maker.​

Chipotle’s rollout of automation solutions occurs weeks after Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) signed AB 257 — legislation that creates a “Fast Food Council” responsible for drafting “sectorwide minimum standards on wages, working hours, and other working conditions,” according to a summary of the bill.

Members of the Fast Food Council are permitted to raise minimum wages up to $22 per hour, representing an increase of over 40% from the $15.50 per hour minimum wage slated to take effect in 2023. Last year, Chipotle boosted hourly wages to range between $11 per hour and $18 per hour.

Newsom Angry at Oil Companies for Obeying the Laws He Passed to Deliberately Raise Gas Prices​

There is no state in the U.S. that penalizes people more for driving a gasoline-consuming car than California. It’s a feature, not a bug. The Democrats and the greens have formed an alliance to make drilling for oil, refining it, and transporting gasoline a byzantine process of rules and regulations in order to put as many roadblocks as possible to prevent the efficient transport of gas.

It’s all for our own good, of course.

Naturally, when supplies get a little tight, the price goes up. In the last few weeks, the refineries in California have been undergoing maintenance. But demand has skyrocketed, which has caused the price of gasoline to rise more than a dollar over the last month.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is lashing out at oil companies who he says are “fleecing” Californians with gasoline prices that are rising disproportionately in the Golden State.
“The fact is, they’re ripping you off. Their record profits are coming at your expense,” Newsom said in a scathing video posted to Twitter Friday in which the governor called for a new windfall tax on oil companies.
Newsom said the windfall tax would “ensure these profits go directly back to help millions of Californians who are paying for this oil company extortion.”

“The degree of diversions from the national prices has never happened before, and oil companies provide no explanation,” Newsom said. “We’re not going to stand by while greedy oil companies fleece Californians.”

In fact, Newsom knows well the reason for the price rise. He has given the refineries permission to sell “winter gas,” which is dirtier than “summer gas.” He’s fully aware that the refineries have plenty of “winter gas” but until now have been unable to sell it because of his idiotic environmental rules.

Most gas here in San Diego is back up between $6 and $7. One place I saw yesterday was $7.09/gal and people were there getting gas. A couple miles up the road it was only $6.39.

California gas prices hit record highs, with OPEC+ move sparking worsening economic threat​

California is facing surging oil prices in the wake of shutdowns at several oil refineries that produce a specific grade of fuel for the state. Prices began to creep up in September after months of declines. And unlike the nationwide rise in gas prices over the summer, this most recent spike is mostly confined to California and the West Coast.


There was also debate among experts about the effect of the move by OPEC+, which amounted to the biggest reduction since 2020 and was designed to boost sagging oil prices.

It remains unclear how the reduction would affect pump prices, but experts said it poses another threat to the shaky global economy amid growing concerns about an impending recession.

The OPEC+ move comes a month before crucial midterm elections in the U.S. President Biden and other Democrats hoped the decline in gas prices in recent months would help them with an electorate angry at rising inflation and concerns about an economic downturn.

CA Refinery Exec Explains How the State's Regulations Affect Gasoline Supply and Prices So Even Gavin Newsom Can Understand​

After informing the Commission that he can only be so specific in his answers without giving away trade secret information, Folwarkow confirmed that yes, Valero has planned maintenance activity underway at one of their two refineries in the state — maintenance that’s “required to keep the refinery running safely and properly and to meet the regulatory expectations of the state.” That’s pretty important.


Mr. Folwarkow educates Hochschild and, by extension, Gavin Newsom, on supply chain resiliency, and on the fact that you can’t enact cap-and-trade fees and other burdensome environmental regulations without affecting the number of refineries in your state, decreasing refining capacity, and ultimately increasing prices.

As to separation between California prices and the prices in the rest of the United States, we can offer the following information. For Valero, California is the most expensive operating environment in the country and a very hostile regulatory environment for refining. California policy makers have knowingly adopted policies with the expressed intent of eliminating the refinery sector. California requires refiners to pay very high carbon cap and trade fees and burdened gasoline with cost of the low carbon fuel standards. With the backdrop of these policies, not surprisingly, California has seen refineries completely close or shut down major units. When you shut down refinery operations, you limit the resilience of the supply chain.

Many commentators have noted that California’s special fuel blend (mandated by the state) causes cost issues, and it does. An industry executive whose company runs two of the state’s 13 operating refineries has a bit more credibility when imparting that information and expanding upon it (emphasis mine):

From the perspective of a refiner and fuel supplier, California is the most challenging market to serve in the United States for several additional reasons. California regulators have mandated a unique blend of gasoline that is not readily available outside of the West Coast. California is largely isolated from the fuel markets of the central and eastern United States. California has imposed some of the most aggressive, and thus expensive and limiting, environmental regulatory requirements in the world. California policies have made it difficult to increase refining capacity and have prevented supply projects to lower operating costs of refineries.

The last paragraph wraps it up perfectly:

We believe the Commission experts understand that California cannot mandate a unique fuel that is not readily unavailable outside of the West Coast and then burden or eliminate California refining capacity and expect to have robust fuel supplies. Adding further costs, in the form of new taxes or regulatory constraints, will only further strain the fuel market and adversely impact refiners and ultimately those costs will pass to California consumers.

It’s written so simply that even Newsom should be able to understand it. But will he?

L.A. Times Admits California Leaders Have Failed for Decades​

Titled: California Repeatedly Warned About Spiking Gas Prices, Fragile Supply. But Fixes Never Came, issues a stark reality that Democrat leaders don’t put their residents first.

“California officials have had repeated warnings over the last two decades that the state’s unique blend of gasoline is susceptible to supply shortages and sharp price spikes,” the Times noted, adding “but despite multiple reports and special committees, California has struggled to find solutions as it tries to rapidly reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.”

The liberal paper noted how California experienced recent outages, which pushed the supply of West Coast gasoline to its lowest level in over a decade, however, state leaders failed to come up with a solution.

“We’ve got to make longer-run plans and not just wait until the crisis is upon us,” Severin Borenstein, the director of UC Berkeley’s Energy Institute at the Haas School of Business said, adding that nothing has been done to combat the problem.

Six years ago, voters approved Proposition 67, which banned plastic bags from checkout lines at grocery stores. Now, plastic bags will no longer be seen at any grocery store in California by the start of 2025.

According to the Mercury News, the number of plastic bags picked up at California beaches during the state’s annual Coast Clean Up day dropped by 61% from 65,736 to 25,768 by 2019.

California makes it illegal for doctors to disagree with politicians​

The statute instructs that, “It shall constitute unprofessional conduct for a physician and surgeon to disseminate misinformation or disinformation related to COVID-19, including false or misleading information regarding the nature and risks of the virus, its prevention and treatment; and the development, safety, and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines.”

California law requires the Medical Board of California to take action — up to and including license revocation — against any licensed physician charged with unprofessional conduct. But under the First Amendment, content-based speech regulation by government entities is presumptively unconstitutional and may be justified only if the government proves that it is narrowly tailored to serve compelling state interests.

How a Case Before the Supreme Court Could Raise the Cost of Bacon​

The Supreme Court on Tuesday will take up a challenge to California’s Proposition 12, which sets animal welfare standards two industry groups are fighting.

At issue is whether voters in The Golden State can set rules for farmers in the Midwest and North Carolina, and thus regulate the pork industry nationwide.

Proposition 12 bars the sale in California of uncooked pork products when the seller knows or should know that the meat came from the offspring of a sow – a breeding pig – that was confined “in a cruel manner.” Among other things, this means that breeding pigs must have at least 24 square feet of living space, which is roughly the size of two bath towels and 10 square feet more than the “gestation crates” used by the vast majority of commercial operations. Violators face fines and the possibility of a 180-day prison sentence for each sale of pork in California that does not meet the state’s standards.
The National Pork Producers Council and the American Farm Bureau Federation went to federal court in California in December 2019 to challenge the law. They argued that Proposition 12 violates what is known as the “dormant commerce clause” – the theory that, even if the Constitution does not explicitly say anything about state law, the Constitution’s grant of power over interstate commerce to Congress also means that states cannot pass laws that discriminate against interstate commerce.
A federal district court rejected the challengers’ argument, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit upheld the lower court’s decision. The challengers then came to the Supreme Court, which in March of this year agreed to weigh in.
The challengers argue that Proposition 12 violates the dormant commerce clause because, as a practical matter, it will not only regulate the pork industry outside of California, but in fact virtually all of its impact will fall outside of California. California, the challengers note, has only one-tenth of 1% of the country’s breeding pigs, so virtually all of the pork consumed in California originates outside the state. Moreover, the challengers add, because one pig can be processed into several different cuts, and there is no way to know where a particular cut of meat will eventually be sold, all pork producers will effectively be required to comply with Proposition 12. On November 16th, 2021 the State Board adopted Resolution No. 2021-0050 “Condemning Racism, Xenophobia, Bigotry, and Racial Injustice and Strengthening Commitment to Racial Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Access, and Anti-Racism.” The resolution cites Black Lives Matter as inspiration and is packed with language like this: “California’s water rights system has been built on racism perpetuated by White Supremacy.”

The resolution goes on: “White supremacy is a systemically and institutionally perpetuated system of exploitation and oppression of nations and peoples of color by white people for the purpose of maintaining and defending a system of wealth, power and privilege.” Citing murders of non-whites by whites, the resolution calls for development of a Racial Equity Action Plan.

This raises questions. Should the State Water Board be drawing inspiration from the largely discredited and openly Marxist Black Lives Matter as a source of policy?

New California Laws Will Create ‘Ideological Purity Test’ for Police by Banning Ties to ‘Hate’ and ‘Bias,’ Critics Say​

The governor also signed AB 2229, which requires applicants to be screened for “bias” before they can join a police force. The “bias” requirement had been enacted previously in 2020, but mistakenly was stricken from the law in 2021, according to a legislative analysis. According to the law’s text, it went into effect immediately upon signing.

Although AB 655 uses a strict definition for the term “hate group” tied directly to “genocide,” critics note that the new law also requires agencies to investigate “a complaint made by the public that alleges, as specified, that a peace officer engaged in membership in a hate group, participation in any hate group activity, or advocacy of public expressions of hate.”

“AB 2229 comprises a political test,” Daniel Greenfield, the Shillman journalism fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center (a conservative organization branded by the SPLC as an “anti-Muslim hate group”), told The Daily Signal.

“It is a blank check for viewpoint discrimination,” Greenfield said, “especially since it fails to identify parameters for defining bias in a time when, under the influence of critical race theory, it is widely held by the Left that all members of the majority group suffer from unconscious bias.”

“It’s entirely possible, furthermore, that membership in a biblically traditional church or synagogue would be considered a bias against sexual orientation,” he warned.

Brigitte Gabriel, a Lebanese-American activist and founder of SPLC-accused “hate group” ACT for America who warns against the threat of political Islamism, warned that AB 2229 “will become an ideological purity test preventing conservatives and Christians from being eligible for service as peace officers due to their belief on issues like marriage sexuality or gender.”
