Former President Trump
Must be Convicted in the Senate
A MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSMAN STENY H. HOYER
The January 6th attack on the United States Capitol was an attack on our democracy, and the very core of American ideals and values. Former President Donald Trump’s effort to overturn the clear election result led to the insurrection we saw on January 6. This week, the Senate will begin the second impeachment trial of former President Trump to hold him accountable for inciting that insurrection.
The mob that stormed the Capitol was clearly inspired by, and called to action by, former President Trump. During his speech to the crowd on January 6, the President used the words ‘fight’ or ‘fighting’ 20 times as he instructed his supporters to ‘stop the steal.’ He organized the mob, inflamed the mob, and deployed them to the Capitol. They assaulted police officers and killed one; terrorized and endangered the lives of Members, staffers, and reporters; and sought to inflict damage to an institution that we hold dear. Former President Trump must be held accountable for the insurrection he encouraged. That is why I believe my Republican colleagues must show courage and convict former President Trump during the upcoming impeachment trial.
Leaders must be held accountable for their actions. That’s why I brought to the House Floor a resolution last week to remove Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from her House Committees.
When I spoke on the House Floor in support of the resolution , I spoke about Rep. Greene’s violent political rhetoric and said, ‘No member ought to be permitted to engage in the kind of behavior that Rep. Greene has and face zero consequences.’ I also said that ‘to do nothing would be an abdication of our moral responsibility to our colleagues, to the House, to our values, to the truth, and to our country.’

We must hold our leaders accountable for their actions. Whether it is inciting a mob that resulted in the death of civilians and law enforcement officers, whether it is speech that is racist, anti-Semitic, and endorses the execution of Members of Congress, Congress has the responsibility to demonstrate our commitment, both as leaders and as citizens, to keeping America a republic and holding leaders accountable.
