Can Atheists Be Parents?

I feel sorry for the Amazonian tree people. They live in trees and many have never even seen another human or civilization. They eat huge, white grubs they find in rotted trees. According to the bible, they have to go to hell and burn cuz they didn't pray to god.

Same for the ppl born BC. Unlucky bastards. :ohwell:

A church says that morally it is wrong to use birth control and not to have sex unless it is to procreate. Should your morals be the same because some church tells you that's the only right way?

A church says you must tithe so you go to their heaven. Can't you be a good, moral person and parent without paying a church for it?

Can you really have a moral compass with no foundation?

...a moral compass.

More specifically, let's define what values a child should be taught.

Honesty
Integrity
Sense of fairness
Work ethic
Ability to dream
Sense of identity as an American
Compassion

Thoughts?

I think that pretty much covers it.

I don't believe in Atheism....by that I mean if a self-proclaimed Atheist examines his/her beliefs in depth, they will discover something resembling a higher power in some form...

HOWEVER, that is completely irrelevant.

The point is, the state has no right to use this couple's lack of religion as a basis for denial of an adoption. What if they'd said they were Satan worshipers who believed in animal sacrifices? It's a recognized religion.

It's beyond the scope of the State's authority to make having a religion a requirement of adoption.

How do you know what an atheist will discover?

It has more to do with YOU telling me what you believe. But do you really want to get into this here? I don't because the religious freaks will be all over it and they are worse than anyone claiming to be Atheist.

I'd add "self reliance."

There are too many kids out there who leave high school and can't find there ass with both hands without mommy holding their wrists.

I think if one has a good work ethic, the rest just falls into place.

What I believe has been covered in this thread. If you can't comprehend it, that's your problem.

to answer the question

YES! Atheists should be able to adopt without the State telling them what they should believe to be able to raise a child.

I comprehend it fine...I'm talking about different areas of belief. If I started getting into it, two things would happen, every my-religion-is-better-than-yours intolerant freak on here would jump in and claim to interpret what I'm asking is something else, they would answer the questions the "right" way and the point I'd be making would be lost.

Just because someone doesn't believe, doesn't mean they don't have good morals and can't be good people.

Also, just because a person believes doesn't mean they will have good morals, and be good people.
