I looked at a car last night, tried to buy it after the test drive. They said they could not sell it to me because it was not Maryland inspected. They just called me to tell me that they could fix it and sell it to me for only $4k more than it is listed for. I am obviously not going to buy the thing, but I think it is a little messed up that they think I should pay to get it to code, I am sure the person who traded it in got less because of this. :tantrum

What State were you looking to buy from?

If you are looking to buy a used car from a licensed Maryland used car dealer, I believe they cannot sell a car that hasn't passed the inspection.

Unless it is an older Mustang and it wouldn't pass anyway, those items will not fail a car, unless the Catylitic Converter was removed. I think you are getting snowed. Run fast, run far.

I understand that they can't sell it until it is fixed, I just don't think I should have to pay to fix the car. They should have offered a lower trade-in to compensate for repairs needed.

And how this is different than you paying for it?

I think he means that they should have offered the previous owner less on his trade in and then fixed it. My bet is that they did.

Buy it "as is" I believe they can sell it that way without an inspection, do the work yourself, or find someplace that will inspect it the way it is
