Wrong kind of lids, but I will keep looking.Huntr1, this might be an option. Of course, you could always have them get you a new one, then order a replacement lid for the old one.

Didn't know what brand yours was, but it looked interesting. You might want to pop into a few thrift stores or try something like Freecycle. Someone might have an old one, or just a lid laying around they want to get rid of. New would be nice, but there's just something about a nice seasoned cast iron pan!! Good Luck!!!buddscreek

go by daves engine service in loveville, he has a spray powder torch that is used for repairing cast iron. have seen this process repair 2" holes in exhaust manifolds.

"spray powder torch"? Never heard of this.
My first thought was a good auto shop for just the reason of welding manifolds and other CI auto parts.

IMO, If you didn't ask for an estimate... you should suck it up and pay them.OH MY GOD!

I dropped off the lid 2 weeks ago. Told them to give it to their welder and let me know if he could do it. Told them I didn't care about the size of the replacement handle so long as it was no taller than what was there originally so that I could still stack my dutch ovens. They said it'd be a day or 2.
I expected a call with a yes/no I can do it and an estimate.
Called on Friday. Hadn't been touched.
Just called. It's been repaired.
$90.00.
They did not call with an estimate first or anything like that.
$90.00!!!!!
I bought the damn thing for $40.00.
Could have bought a brand new dutch for less than what Jaag's thinks I am going to pay.
They can keep the freaking lid if they think I am paying $90.00.

They were supposed to give it to the welder for an evaluation and then call me and let me know. At that point I was planning to get the price and give them the go/no go.

Do they know this is what you were thinking? Seems to me you asked them if they could fix it and they said it would be a few days and then when they got to it... they fixed it. IMO, Judge Judy would expect you to pay. You asked for a service, they provided it.

Yes. Conversation was along the lines of..."Can you weld cast iron?" "We have a wizard with welding cast iron." "Can you see if he can fix this?" "Drop it off and I'll give it to him to evaluate and let you know."
