Cereal, advice & screaming

watercolor

yeah yeah
When did you start cereal in the bottle? I was told I could start it at around 10 weeks- but she isnt eating like crazy. She does her normal bottle sked and that is pretty much it. (of course if she eats to much she has projectile vomit). I am not able to bf anymore- so I have be supplementing formula. I figured that if she is gettin fulfilled through that (if not more sometimes cause of the spit up) - I wouldnt need to move to that yet- but the ped is "suggesting" it. Just some thoughts on it would be good.

Also, regarding the screaming. For the past 3 days- she has been having a terrible time in the evening. From about 4 pm till about 10:30...she will cry and scream. To the point she is turning red. I have tried all sorts of things. Walking, slow dancing, dark rooms, tummy pats, etc. She is burping good. Didnt know if maybe it was the formula? Has anyone had problems with theirs having issues with similac? I am wondering about asking to change- but didnt know if there was something else I could try. We have tried the mylicon drops last night and tonight- tonight seems a "little" better.

My thoughts are either:

A) she is having a growth spurt and is cranky as hell from that
B) she is cutting a tooth. She has a bud starting, you can feel it on the lower gums when you rub- and she is chewing when you put your finger in her mouth
C) she is getting sick..but I would have thought a temp would have perked by now..
D) the formula isnt right

Unfortunately, the ped's office isnt open till monday- and I didnt think that urgent care could give me any sort of info- other than to say "pay me for crap advice".. so I am soliciting you once again.

I really thought I knew alot more on babies.. I am truly finding out I dont.

Thanks in advance to guys, I appreciate it!

Colic.

How old is she now? I lost track.

Edit: Never mind, I just saw your sig

My daughter had colic and there was something they gave me for it, but it didn't work. We used to take her for rides in the car and that seemed to chill her out a bit. It's just an immature digestive system and you have to ride it out for a few weeks (or months :faint: )

Well I would have thought she would have had colic from the beginning, no?
It usually starts at about 3 weeks or a month.

I would not feed her cereal if she's colicky because she's going to have a hard time with it. I feel ya, girl - it was really rough when we had to deal with it. :huggy: Try switching off with Jesse, let him walk her while you go outside and relax, then vice versa, or you'll go crazy.

Also, what are we talking about with "projectile vomiting"? A lot or only occasionally?

I thought cereal was 6 mo. Both of ours had colic problems and it sucked. Mylicon helped some.

Our daughter actually had an allergy to Oleoresin of Paprika. It is a food color in cheese, pepperoni, and a lot of other foods. We had a hard time figuring it out, but it's amazing how resourceful you can be when your little one is in pain. The doctor was surprised we could narrow it down. It was only what was left in breast milk - I think it's called a metabolite - she's never had a problem with the real thing.

Sorry there are no easy answers, but if she's thriving, not puking, but just colicky, you have a normal baby. If it's to the point you are really concerned, by all means check with your pediatrician.

We had some concerning issues when ours were little, but even in the middle of the night we could call the pediatricians office and get their answering service. We always got a call back within an hour. They usually just put our minds at ease, but as a concerned parent that's really what we were looking for.

Good luck! Just remember, no matter how hard it is now, the hard part is when they are teens.

Just something to try........switch the formula. You might have to try a couple different ones until you get the right one. I know we did with the youngest. He didn't do well with regular formula, would gag and spit it up. So we put him on soy for a bit. That caused him to be constipated so once again we switched him to Latosefree. That worked great. When he was about 8 months, I started mixing it with regular formula and eventually was able to get him acclimated to regular formula and he is now drinking regular milk like a champ.

Try a low iron formula but not before talking to your Pediatrician. It helps, but if it is colic, you are in for a little bit of a bumpy ride for a few months.

My son had these issues from birth. I took him back and forth to the Dr.'s every other day. We switched formulas, gave him colic medicine, you name it. Finally the Dr. said "well, I think you just have an adorable but extremely hard-headed and determined little boy. He wants to eat on demand, not on a schedule." Fifteen years later, I look back and can see that the Dr. hit the nail on the head. :lmao: He still has not changed........

Oh and if she does have colic...you may have to use Nutramigan formula (enfamil brand) or Alimentum® Advance (similac brand). Both are used for colic.

Peace
I say colic.
Also, my pediatrician said nothing other than formular before 6 months. Of course, I didn't really follow that rule with my son, but the girls seemed fine with that. Also, they said not to put formula in the bottle but to start it on a spoon. I guess when it comes down to it, do what you feel is right for your baby because the advice is sooo varried.

My Sweetest Boy
I would bet it is the typical fussy period every infant has. It always seems it's right around the dinner hour.

If she is fed and dry, let her cry a bit. My feeling is that sometimes you can over stimulate them.

Welcome to parenthood.

They told me all that, too - then my mother came to visit, threw away all my baby books, put a few spoons of cereal in a bottle of formula, widened the nipple hole and fed it to my 3 week old son.

I got 4 luxurious hours of sleepy sleepy.

That's another thing, Sum - they say babies eat every 4 hours and sleep the rest of the time? That's a lie, as I'm sure you already realize. People who tell pregnant women that should get the chair.

The oldest did go 4 hours between feedings but the youngest was every two hours for the longest time!! Now he is 20 months and eating nonstop. I just had to go and get more apples, oranges, grapes, and bananas. I bet that won't last till Wednesday.

When Doug was born, I was all freaked out about SIDs - remember that, you women with older kids? They made it sound like it was some epidemic and you had to really be careful. Then we find out that all these "crib deaths" were parent inflicted.

Lay them on their stomach, not their back. Lay them on their back, not their stomach. Lay them on their side, NEVER their back or stomach.

A person could go crazy.

Sounds like you got the good version of Mom's help. My mom tells me that when I was six months, her mom decided I was allergic to milk. She switched me to goat's milk. It wasn't until 5 years later that a chest x-ray proved I had actually been sick. Fortunately, no real harm done, other than the thought of drinking goats milk.

I guess I was lucky with our kids. My wife was able to breast feed until they were two, so we didn't need to mess with the whole formula thing. Also, part of the deal was if she was a stay at home, she got to get up so I could work. Don't take that wrong - If she had continued working, the nightime duty would be shared. We agreed on the arangement, and we don't regret it one bit.

Oh and I know I was a horrible mom. Both of mine slept on their stomachs. They were the same if they were on their backs and just wiggle and not sleep. Put em on their tummies and off to nite nite they went.
