Cereal, advice & screaming

It definately sounds like Colic. If it were the food or anything else, it would happen more frequently. Colic is usually described as screaming bouts for hours at about the same time every day. They used to give us those mylocon drops too. I don't know if they work or not but it certainly wont hurt and they like the taste. I used to also lay my daughter on her belly across my knees and rock her back and forth.

Also, the nutramigen is what our doctor prescribed. Sometimes I think colic comes on from a milk intolerance. My daughter did the nutramigen for a while and then she was switched to prosobe.

The cereal I believe can be started at 3 months where everything else is supposed to be 6 months. I started my daughter at 3 months on cereal and I think she was 6 months for other food. However, they tell you to make the cereal very watery I could not deal with that! It just ran all down her face so I would make it thicker, she seemed to tolerate it and actually like it that way. She seemed frustrated when it would run all out of her mouth. I also did mix a little bit of the baby applesauce in it to give it a little better flaver. Once she got on baby food at 6 months, I mixed EVERYTHING with cereal! Instead of putting the formula in the cereal, I would just take a little bit of the formula and mix baby food and cereal together. She loved it that way. Once she is 6 months, you can also mix the cereal w/ the baby juice.

Are you mixing the cereal in the bottle and feeding it to her during her screaming bouts? She may be screaming because she is not getting anything if you have not widened the nipple.

Also, she isn't constipated is she? Sometimes that rice cereal can cause constipation. I always had to use the barley or the oatmeal w/ my daughter.

Nope, she isnt constipated. Made sure of that. But that isnt it. And I havent tried the cereal yet. Was just asking if the time frame I was told seemed to be good. but thanks for all the advice. I will most definately keep it in mind when it comes time for all of it. thanks!

It may be a sort of acid reflux called GERD. You are to keep the baby in a sitting position for approx. 20 minutes after they eat. If they go into the laying position, the acid starts to go up their throat and burn. That is why they will turn so red and start to arch their back. I had to put my son on medication for this. The medicine helped with the crying and arching back but he still spit up like crazy. The holding in a sitting position did help with the spitting up, but didn't stop it completely.

I second this post. My son had reflux as well. It started out him getting sick once a week, but the crying was never ending. Back and forth to the doc with him. Getting sick was now 2-3 times a week, we add cereal to the bottle, more and more each week. Finally had an upper GI done and he was put on meds. Help ALOT!!! Man what a different child, and the throwing up was only once in a blue moon. I would really check into this, and maybe that's why your doc suggest the cereal so soon. But I know of several people giving there new borns of only a week old cereal in their bottles.

Good luck to you.

They told me all that, too - then my mother came to visit, threw away all my baby books, put a few spoons of cereal in a bottle of formula, widened the nipple hole and fed it to my 3 week old son.

I'm currently pregnant and that is the exact advice my mother gave me. She said she did it with all three of us and we turned out fine. I will definately give it a try if I find a need to.

Not trying to be devils advocate, but they do say that if you give food too early that it can trigger food allergies and that their bodies aren't ready for solids until 6 months. I too gave my kids cereal early, so I didn't follow the rules either, just wanted to put that out there.

I have not been diligent in my reading and did not come across that info yet. I'm just going to keep praying that I have the perfect baby that sleeps like a champ and isn't fussy. I know I'm probably in la-la land, but a girl can dream.

None of my babies were colicy and the first two were great sleepers! The last one has been a little bugger but she has reason.

Give Skeeter to Auntie Miggy - we'll go mudding and she'll feel much better. Plus if she is screaming the entire time, maybe the infernal clock in my head will stop ringing.

Go to the mall with my friend's 2 year old and 4 year old. That shuts my clock off REAL quick!
