Okay, so we had a really bad storm and ever since we haven't been able to connect to the Internet at home. I did the whole routine of unplugging (modem and router) and replugging, as well as reboot 11 thousand times. Still, to no avail.

In the meantime, both the modem and the router appear to be working. However, the only lights on my modem are obviously the power and the cable lights (the pc and data lights aren't on). As well, the only lights appearing on my router are the power light, 1 ethernet light (it's a 4 port switch), and the internet light.

I get on the horn with my ISP. They check the status of my LAN and inform me that I'm connected so it must be my router. She stated that I should buy a new router and that should fix my problem. So being that I thought she was giving me professional and intelligent advice, I take my happy arse to the store and pick up a new one. Get home, hook it up AND STILL...NOTHING.

Now, I would call them back but each time you call you have to wait on hold for 15+ minutes. Can any of you please tell me what the heck is wrong here? I'm sure it could be an obvious problem but at this point, I'm too irritated to search any further.

Thanks, MM! :smooch:

So tell me, how much does a NIC cost and how does one install a NIC?
If I'm not mistaken you can get them from $15-$30... Easy peasy to install, you just remove the old card some of them just have latches holding them in place, insert the new one, put the cover back on, fire up the cpu and (install the driver if the operating system doesnt pick it up) and you are in there....

Well, shiat! I was hoping it would be expensive enough to buy a whole new system!

So, when I get home I should ping. If that doesn't work, then it's most likely my NIC? Would there be any other culprits?

After re reading, you bought a new router? Have you actually waited on hold and got through and let them know you have a new router? They might need the MAC address from the label of the new router...

I've actually called back but never got through as the little one needed attention at that particular time. After waiting 15+ each time I had to hang up. I just sent Linksys tech support an email b/c when I loaded the driver it prompted me for a password and it didn't work. It won't complete the setup unless I have this password. Should I hold off on the NIC?

Yes, go through the motions with them first. They just might simply need to add the mac address from the new router...:yay:

They shouldn't need the MAC address for the router. If you replace your cable modem, they WILL need the MAC address for that.

If its a cable modem, and you replaced the router, you need to call them to have your Cable Modem Reset... It's that simple. Router replacement requires the cable company to do a reset on their side.

I'd bet that your cable modem is fried. But here are a couple of things you can try:

If the cable light is on, then it sounds like it is getting a signal from the cable. To be sure, you can try hooking up a TV (hopefully you have a portable one with a cable input) to the cable jack to see if you are getting a signal. Yes, I know that the data signal is different from the video signal, but at least you'll know if the jack or line are dead or alive.

You can try bypassing the router altogether by disconnecting the cable that goes from the modem to the router and connecting it between the modem and your PC.

I tried that last night. Still no Internet connection.

So last night I tried testing the cable signal and all is well. I also pinged and that was completed sucessfully. What do I do now? Should I try a new modem as previously mentioned?

It sounds like your Router lights are right.. and we are talking about a wired connection.. Cable running from your computer to the router, and a cable running from the Router to the Modem??

I would try new Cat5 cable between your PC and the Router, and the Router and the Modem. Also go into your hardware settings, uninstall your network card, and re-install it.
