But the fact remains that the parents need to use some common sense when it comes to child care and not just figure that the provider is licensed and must be okay because the state says so.
I've met you and your husband and wouldn't have a single qualm about leaving my child with you. But when my kids were young and I was interviewing daycare babes, some of these gals would usher me into their filthy house with kids screaming and running wild. Then the surly husband would come out and grunt in my direction before barking some command at the wife. Needless to say, I wouldn't even consider leaving my children in that home, but she WAS licensed.
And I agree with you about unlicensed daycare providers - they've already proven they'll break the law. Why trust them with your kid?
Oh, I'm not saying that all licensed providers are winners, not by any means... Shoot, when I first decided to get my license, it was with the attitude that it couldn't be too hard if some of the losers I'd met as a parent looking for care could do it. Just proves my main point that if they aren't licensed, Why? what's so terribly wrong with them?
I will add the disclaimer that in many states licensing laws are lax. In Virginia and NC, you would need to take in 6 or more kids to need a license. In Tennesee, that number is 9 or more. I've never had more than 5 daycare kids at a time. I don't especially want more than that, so if I lived in similar circumstances, in a state that didn't require me to have a license, I might not do it. This woman where the child was killed was operating legally. Lacking common sense, yes, but legal. As a parent, there may have not been any red flags warning that there was a problem. Chances are when the parent went to check the place out, the husband wasn't around. Maybe the place was reasonable clean and the woman was very kind to all appearances. People can appear to be anything they want to be for an hour or so, you can't blame the parents in this situation.
