I take my daughter to the Center for Children, I really like the people there. She is selective mute (she chooses who to talk to ) She started talking to her therapist on the 2nd visit and is already going in her apointments with the therapist without Mommy. She is 6. The therapist made her feel comfortable and she loves going there. Up until recently she didn't eat at school, use the bathroom ,make eye contact with teachers or even talk. She is now nodding, making eye contact and today she ate her lunch and talked to the school couselor by herself. I highly reccomend Center for Children.

A leather belt or willow switch works just as well.

Much cheaper, too.

I find that interesting. What have they said as far as a diagnosis?

I have been very impressed with her listening skills. My kids both saw her at different times in their teenage years, and think vbery highly of her

A belt for someone with a mental illness? Do you go to childrens and use a switch on the cancer patients?

You're the only one who said anything about mental illness. Most of today's behaviors can be attributed to bad manners and a lack of discipline.

I made a different assumption than you did. I don't know what your proffession or qualifications are, but I deal with children and adults whith different forms of mental illness on a daily basis. The probelm is because people can't see the illness, they attribute it to bad behavior and poor manners, when in my experience much of it is attributed to a psychological disorder, diagnosed by a professional.

People look at mental illness with disdain, while treating other illnesses with empathy. Neither of the people afflicted with either type of illness has chosen to be afflicted.

I understand bad manners and parenting as well! However, when a parent is looking for a psychologist or a therapist, they don't sound like a poor parent to me. They sound like someone who has recognized they need help or expertise outside of their capabilities.

I used to work with Dr. Elaine Castles (based in Solomon's with a private practice) in a setting for troubled teenage boys. I was very impressed with her! She knows her stuff, knows and cares about children, and has an ability to put things into everyday terms while using much common sense. She was wonderful and everyone loved her! Here is her contact info:

Center for Children would be a good choice. I am a CASA volunteer and the St. Mary's and Calvert CASA office operates through Center for Children. I don't know any of the counselors but I do know that they are highly recommended by the CASA program.
