When I watch a movie..9/10 times I will pick a comedy or children's movie..why? Because life is sad enough without adding to it. I don't watch dog movies..because the dog is usually beat or killed, or both. I made the mistake of watching My Dog Skip a few years ago...broke my no dog movie rule because it looked cute. WRONG. the fricken dog dies not once...but twice. cried my eyes out. NEVER again.

So, I try to screen my movies more carefully now. So I bought Up at walmart the other day...looked very cute. Had a dog in it but animated dogs are usually safe..and that adorable little asian looking boyscout kid. Boy was I wrong. WHY WHY WHY is that a movie for children?? within the first 20 minutes of the movie I was sobbing and SO was laughing his butt off and considering sending me to the funny farm. IT IS SAD. dreadfully sad. Then the little boy comes and it is cute and funny...then sad again. Do not watch it.

that is all.

You sound like my 7th grade english teacher who complained that the Disney movie Black Cauldron was satanic.

How does the dog die twice? I thought cats were the ones with 9 lives.

Lib, I see nothing wrong with children getting exposed to people and animals dying in a story/movie. Dying is a part of life and it provides an opportunity to expose them to death and for you to discuss it with them should they initiate concern or questions. It is much better to begin the exposure and dialog with a cartoon than to have their first exposure be with a person or pet that is near and dear to their heart.

You should get Old Yeller.

It's a nice safe Disney flick

"All Dogs go to Heaven" is another one. Animated. Safe.

Living in a bubble and isolating yourself (and in this case, the child as well) from the normal events of life is foolish. when it does happen, and it will, IRL, you won't be prepared for it and it will be that much harder on all involved.

Sure thing. I think you are right to a degree.... But I am adult and have experienced much of that in my life already. When I watch a movie, I want happiness and comedy. Not death and sadness, which is already in life so much already.

I think that kids will, just like myself, realize that life is sad and death is real without having to make every damn Disney movie about orphans or dead puppies. I don't think it is shielding a child to show happy movies...but rather using an occasion to escape from life and it's sadness..rather than add to it..

Sure seeing Bambi's mother get shot may help a young kid understand when grandma croaks a LITTLE better..but is it going to be any less sad?

I cried over the recent cell phone commercial when the poor little girl was posting flyers looking for her lost dog and the nice dude came along and snapped a pic of the flyer and txt'd it to all his friends and they found the dog and he was sitting on the steps with the dog when the little girl got home from hanging flyers... I was touched by his kindness and so happy the dog got home in one piece and the little girl was so happy to see him... :bawl:

NOt isolation at all. It is me CHOOSING not to be sad for no reason. Life is sad. Sad things happen. People you love die, beloved pets die, people get cancer, you get terrible diseases, unfortunate and sad things happen to everyone..many times in their life. People understood and were beyond prepared for these life events LONG before movies were even invented. So to say that watching movies prepares you for REAL life..is the more foolish thing. Movies are distractions, entertainment. I choose to be entertained by happiness and lightness...rather than pain and suffering. I get enough of that in life, and it isn't entertaining at all.
