I bet the diesel sub didnt see/hear that US attack sub sneaking up behind it either

:roflmao: Darn, you beat me to it. My husband was an ST (sonar tech) on a LA class sub for 4 years. No way in HELL was there not an SSN on that Chinese sub's tail.

:ohwell: Uh, no...

If a 688 had been on it's tail they would not have allowed the sub to get close to the carrier (or any other BG unit) let alone INSIDE the screen without reacting in some fashion.

That's what I was thinking. Would have been really funny to see the Chinese sub surface and then see the US sub surface right behind it. :lmao:

Unless they didn't hear the Chinese sub. Toshiba sold the technology to the Soviets during th 80's that was used to make the propellers for U.S. Anyone remember that besides me? The Russians have been strapped for cash. Any bets that the Russians sold a little technology to the Chinese?

LordStanley

I know nothing
Pure speculation, but what about this scenario.....

Chinese sub was not stalking the battle group. It was just sitting there minding its own business, when out of know where this American Carrier BG came with 5 miles of it.

The Captain of the diesel sub surfaced to let the BG know it was there; its intentions were non hostile and didn’t want to get blown out of the water.

Possible?

Diesel subs, when under water uses it's batteries and can be very quiet, thanks to Toshiba's propeller machining technology.

Gawd I know this is a stupid question but....why didn't the radar pick it up if it was that close???
Normal radar does not work under water. Sonar is used under water and normally passive sonar (listening) is used. You don't keep your own location secret if you go "banging" around the sea.

That very sellout you listed is the reason why my husband will NEVER buy anything Toshiba.

I think Nucklesack's post said it rather nicely. Yes diesel subs are quiet, but our submarine sailors are the best trained in the world. (thanks to Admiral Rickover, may he rest in peace). Just because this Chinese sub surfaced near the Kitty Hawk doesn't mean an SSN or a P-3 didn't have a bead on her.
