Gawd I know this is a stupid question but....why didn't the radar pick it up if it was that close???

The Song class subs are just as quiet as our LA class attack subs and their are restrictions (physical and doctrine) to using active SONAR.

How you like me now?

so if you are under water and a blip comes up on the screen it is from the noise?

That very sellout you listed is the reason why my husband will NEVER buy anything Toshiba.

I think Nucklesack's post said it rather nicely. Yes diesel subs are quiet, but our submarine sailors are the best trained in the world. (thanks to Admiral Rickover, may he rest in peace). Just because this Chinese sub surfaced near the Kitty Hawk doesn't mean an SSN or a P-3 didn't have a bead on her.

I've spent more time in a CIC than I care to remember. This thread is actually getting me heated! :lmao:

Incidentally, the SONG class sub uses a German propulsion system.

*Doesn't remember what a CIC is* sorry :lmao:

German huh? I've seen their subs a handful of times, but don't know much about them other than they're TINY compared to our stuff.

It kills me cause people are like 'Oh but the Cold War is over we don't need as many submarines, Russia don't have anything left' Uh no, it's who Russia's SOLD THEIR SH** TO that we have to worry about now. I love listing off countries that have submarine capabilities to people just to get the looks on their faces...

No, that due to the need for the movie director to want to show you something

Quite frankly I'm suprised and STG's noticed it when it surfaced. Our 53C sonar and techs couldn't find an earthquake in a class of ice water. :lmao:

We had a sub surface, the SPY radar operator called out the contact bearing and range and Sonar still couldn't find it.

:lmao: We had the same thing. I listened on the biatch box.

"Sonar, Bridge, there's a sub bearing 180, 5 miles."

"Bridge, Sonar, there is no sub in the vicinity."

"Sonar, Bridge, would you like to borrow my binoculars and take a look?" :killingme

Seriously though, if there is no known threat in the area, they won't be looking hard. This sounds more like an intelligence breakdown. If intell doesn't alert the BG to the threat, they won't be streaming tails. Buoys are too expensive to just drop randomly with no known threat.

Pure speculation, but what about this scenario.....

Chinese sub was not stalking the battle group. It was just sitting there minding its own business, when out of know where this American Carrier BG came with 5 miles of it.

The Captain of the diesel sub surfaced to let the BG know it was there; its intentions were non hostile and didn’t want to get blown out of the water.

Possible?

...because I am of the impression that a diesel boat can't keep up underwater.

True? Not true?

Its the little dark room with all the red lights on the boat.

...the little room where Gene punched Denzel in the face over a debate as to whether or not to vaporize parts of the Soviet Union?

That place? Why, now I feel like I know all about US nuke subs!

True? Not true?

Displacement 1,700 tons surfaced, 2,250 tons (dived)
Length 75 meters / 246 ft
Beam 8.4 meters / 27.6 ft
Draft 17.5 ft
Speed 12-15 kts (surfaced) 22 kts (dived)
Crew 60 (10 officers)
Propulsion Deisel-electric 2 or 3 MTU Deisels 1 Shafts

If the battle group knows the sub is there, they can easily outrun it. Under normal peacetime conditions, the BG will travel at 15 knots, so it would be easy for a sub to flank the BG, pull ahead, slow to quiet speed, then pop up close enough to shoot.

That's what is dangerous about this: if China wanted to start something, they could have knocked out the only carrier in the region. It would take days or even weeks to get another one into the region.

I'm pretty sure the Carrier was steaming around in Condition 4 peacetime steaming and based on this defense posture, wasn't really caring whats in the area. Last I remember the Chinese Navy just had a nice visit in San Diego and Hawaii and I have visited China on many occassions.

Anyone who ever served and knows the musle and assets applied to a CVBG during wartime steaming conditions knows that Sub would have probable been sunk pierside... :coffee:
