From my understanding, hip problems can be either genetic or situational. For example, my catahoula has been tested for genetic hip problems, but there is a possibility that he can develop dysplasia through other factors, such as exercise or feeding.

:yeahthat: Growth spurts..feeding incorrectly which causes growing too fast..exercising too much in short spurts and not continual...like long jogs, etc. But it is still better to start with a good hip joint which is where genetics plays an important part.

umm i dont know if yall noticed but it said LIMITED REG. which means you cant breed that dog, and cant show the dog in confermation. If its 1000 just to have a healthy pup that just sits around and u cant get any money back out of it... and the pups that we sale(brittanys) they r socialized and they r able to walk on a leash, the mother has good blood lines, the father is show quility, and he has his cgc and had his eyes checked and passed, and we only sell r pups for 350, with all there shots. But then again u spend the money the way u want. I would adopt a lab... but it would b awsome using for hunting!

Breeders want to control their bloodlines. It's not uncommon. You can usually work with a breeder if you want to adhere to their standards when it comes to breeding.

I don't know what particular pics either of you are looking at, but even the males are a little on the chunky side if you ask me.

My sister has the english bred labs and they are much stockier then the american bred labs. She paid 1200 for hers, one was yellow and the other like a cream color. The choc lab rescue I have is very small in comparison.

Try going to Petco during their adoptions days. My fiancee and I got a really nice Black Lab puppy that is huge now for like I think it was $150 or something like that. I think $1,000 is a bit much.

I am sorry but 1000 dollars is ridiculous. Just as an option, my boyfriend and I do fostering with the Lab Rescue of the Potomac and they also have a variety of different dogs available. They are great dogs who are just looking for a loving home. We actually fell in love with one of our fosters and ended up keeping him. Again, as an option www.lab-rescue.com

I was looking at all the pics on the site too...not just the females. I'd be more than chunky if I had nine babies!
As someone else posted, maybe this is a different line, English or whatever...

Walter Reed has an English Labrador therapy dog. He's much shorter and stockier than traditional labs, and is so handsome and sweet.

Yeah- another raw foods breeder!!!! I LOVE to see that!! My Lab Clipper is a raw foods breeder. Finding a breeder that raised their pups solely on raw was a major factor for me (among many other things) when I was looking for a Lab breeder. I went to dog shows, studied blood lines and talked to people like crazy for about a year before I found a breeder that I truly wanted to support. She was breeding very few litters and she is extremely knowledgeable about bloodlines, conformation and nutrition. She is truly trying to improve the breed by only using dogs with perfect conformation, temperament and all screenings (eyes, hips, elbows and heart). She also makes sure all her dogs can stand in a conformation ring and but also go out and hunt. In other words- they are treated like happy Labs- not "show" dogs. All her dogs get their hunting titles which I like since she's doing everything with the dogs that they've been bred to do. For me, Clipper was well worth the research and time spent!! That's not to say that I don't think rescue is important- it is EXTREMELY important!! This breeder is heavily involved with the Potomac Lab Rescue. Sorry to go on and on about her. I just love supporting a truly great breeder that isn't breeding simply because she just loves puppies and happens to have a nice dog she'd like to breed.

Are labs normally that chunky? I thought they looked kind of heavy, but I'm no lab expert.

Yes, they seem to be a little chunky? Here's a picture of my full bred Choc Lab and he's a big boy but not chunky..

Gross...I don't like the BARF diet...but that is another thread entirely.

You don't have to eat it. BARF isn't for everyone. I don't feed it to my dogs but I do feed human grade food. What do you feed your pup?

Hope it's not Rimadyl.
What is wrong with Rimadyl? That's what the vet gave our dog when she had her knee replaced. We still give her one every now and then if she is acting like she is hurting.

You got a phone number or web address for these folks? Where are they located?

And to clarify to everyone AGAIN. It is not for me, I am not buying a dog, just helping out a friend. :yay: TIA

What is the going rate for an AKC registered Chocolate Lab? A lady in my office received an email from her son who is flying to Florida to buy a $1000 Chocolate Lab puppy. That seems high, but I've never bought a dog before ever (and never intend to). Just trying to dig up info.

TIA. :yay:

Also notice on the website you posted that the litter have Limited Registration.
