Jimmy, Afghanistan and Pakistan were democracies in the 4th century BC. This isn't something George Bush dreamed up to push his agenda. Democracy existed in that region before anyone had even dreamed that there would be a United States.

Besides that, we have a republic. Republics existed long before the United States some of which had state religions. That is why the Constitution prohibits Congress from making any laws to establish a religion; the limit is notably only on Congress.
