Class Action Lawsuits...

I am waiting on a settlement now. It's not for much but after all the stuff they put me through I think I deserve it.

I participated in one a few years ago and got $12 from a company. I'm part of one right now with Sirius Radio. I was told I don't have to do anything and I will get (maybe) a month free service when all is said and done but no one called and no one asked me any questions.

I was thinking about getting into a few of those big lawsuits on TV against the pill companies because of my Mom. She was taking most of those pills when she died in 2007 but I'm not sure it would be worth the effort. The fine print kinda scared me away from doing it. I, too, was hoping that someone could advise me one way or the other because it would be a rather large settlement if the people win...

Is it just one of those that you sign a form and dont have to do anything else? Ive done two...one git me 500$ and the other 12$

I participated in one back in the late 90's. Remington Arms Co. Something to do with shotgun barrels based on the serial number of the shotgun. Took <5 minutes and I got a check a month or so later. Bought the shotgun used, got the check, sold the stock and barrel on eBay, bought a replacement stock and barrel and in the end I was into the shotgun for <$100.00 all told.

I throw that crap away and prefer not to have my name associated with class action lawsuits. It bothers me to make some sleazy ambulance chaser rich just so I can walk away with $12.

Yeah, but you're not going to get any of it. The lawyers will walk away with multi-million$$ and you, along with the 10,000 other plaintiffs, will only get a couple of bucks.

Right and the company will up monthly service charges for customers to compensate for what they have been court ordered to pay out. The only ones to make anything out of these large law suits are the lawyers often walking away with 30 to 50 percent of the overall amount awarded.

It is all so greedy, in my opinion so I never bother with responded when asked to do so.

We have participated in 3. 1 was for a company B used to work for several years back that didnt pay overtime properly he ended up receiving a few thousand $ for that one. The 2nd one we only received $100 or so. We are waiting to hear back from the 3rd one which is regarding BOFA. I guess they had been overcharging account fees, transfer fees, bounced checks, etc... We've had an account w/ them for 15+ years so I am interested to see what happens there.

My sister participated in one for WalMart and she received a check for $1.43 :lmao:

It is my understanding the lawsuit amount is the same no matter how many join. The total amount awarded is divided by the amount of joiners... well the total amount MINUS the lawyers fees.

Correct. But in some cases if it involves an employer it is awarded differently. At least it was in B's case w/ the not paying overtime correctly. It was paid out based on how long you were with the company.

That's exactly how it works. :yay:

If you have a real complaint against a company, you're better off filing suit on your own. Class action suits typically only benefit the lawyers. I get them from some shyster going after Verizon and Nationwide all the time. Typically they state in the fine print that I'll only receive $5 or so should I decide to participate.

Never asked a lawyer if it was factual or not but I enjoyed "The King of Torts" by John Grisham from a story line aspect as well as how the process evolves and works.

I was thinking about that when I saw this thread. Typical Grisham liberal anti-corporate bullcrap, but an eye-opening look at the tort law process.
