Smaller plate worked for me. But, I also have made a discipline (and I'll tell you it's HARD!) of taking only a bite or two of anything sweet, and tossing it. Take my kids to Brewster's and I order a child size cup. No more than three bites in and out it goes. Actually went to Sweet Frog with my dd yesterday and was pleased that I could put just a taste in my cup and only pay for that, so no more wasting money at Brewster's for us.
But, if weight loss is the goal, the bottom line is that it is not going to be easy, and there is no way to make it easy. Exercise, and denying yourself what everyone-else-is-eating is the only way to go.
