Coal miners lose Free Black Lung screenings under Trump

Back around 1972, my Dad, who was combat aircrew in WWII, Korea and Vietnam left the Navy and got work in a puzzle factory in our hometown of Waltham Ma. They had bypassed the interlocks on the cutting press to speed production. So he was able to reach in to silde the newly cut puzzle out of the press and the press came down.....

Ended up with a hook. Small lump sum and medical paid for.

That was a long time ago. And you don't need the unions, just make the laws and enforce the damn things.
Where the union should come in is they exist long after the company disappears so the workers still have a funded pension/health care. Many mines just went under and left the miners high and dry.

She doesn't know what malicious compliance means.

I think I found her. She was recently arrested. Whadaya think? I think it's entirely possible that this is her.

Drive by any construction site. Look at the PPE being worn. Look at the safety measures taken. Ever been inside factories? I do on a regular basis, and I see evidence of companies taking steps to ensure worker safety all the time. From a tiny little company in northern MN that makes valves and such to Boeing and Harris.

Goodness of their heart? Afraid of fines if they don't? Motive doesnt matter as long as they comply. I worked for a month at a Boeing facility back in 2020. Safety was everywhere. Spent a week with L3 Harris on Long Island. And I wasnt in conference rooms, I was out on the floor working with hardware.

So why did so many miners end up with black lung and why is it still happening today?

And why would we want to remove those protections?

If its still happening, then the govt provided system isnt friken working, is it?

I've never said take it away. I said make the companies pay for it. monitor that, and fine the crap out of them for noncompliance. Not sure what's hard about this. Ever work in a place that required things for personal safety?

Yes. If people are still getting sick obviously the fines or whatever enforcement mechanism isn't working. Therefore the government has stepped in to help.

So why are you cheering that free protections are being taken away

Sounds like the govt program isnt working......... Shocker, that...... If the enforcement doesnt work, then you need to increase the pain point. Like hiring illegals, it has to hurt the ones stroking the checks.

Good luck with that. The mine owners will just keep writing checks to their local representatives to pass the buck on.

Seems you don't care much about the miners or the immigrants being taken advantage of.

If you are for such small government how do you feel about Trump announcing government price controls on prescription drugs today?

How many miners do you know that have respiratory illnesses? Be specific.

I'd wager if one miner started wearing a high efficient PPE mask to protect from black lung, others would soon follow. Then it also becomes a tax deduction because the employer isn't providing them and they are needed for the job.

So because of corruption, we just pass this cost on to others? Not sure which part of punish the ones who don't comply didn't sink in for you.

I do care. Let govt fill its proper role. Set a requirement. Punish those who don't comply.

I think unless someone can explain why a drug that costs $80 in other countries costs costs $800 here, or even $800 in insurance and $300 off, expecting them to price drugs here like they do in other countries isn't unreasonable.

Masks are considered a secondary form of PPE, the mines are required to keep the dust below a certain level, it's done with ventilation and spraying water. Miners are given masks, but most do t wear them because they coat with coal and rock dust in no time.

A classmates father developed a treatment for black lung back in the 80s.

The mining companies do provide chest X-rays.

NIOSH's real role in this is researching better ways to prevent black lung, can't really expect a mining company to have the expertise to do the research on prevention.

None but my grandfather lost his arm in one in Pa circa 1900, they clocked him out and paid him up to the minute. he borrowed some money from a priest, bought a truck and groceries, sold door to door then opened up his own store until the 60's.
Where there's a will there's a way.
