My family is thinking of getting a Cocker Spaniel puppy. I have been doing some research on them and it seems like they are pretty good dogs? Does anybody know anything about them? If so, are they good with young children?

Now this is only what I've heard from some owners. They are usually ok if the kids were there first, not the other way around!!:jameo:

We had one when we were kids. Great dog! Never barked. If we were outside he was right there with us and would let out one bark if a car pulled up or someone came. Mom new if Mo barked there was a reason. He would lay on the step while we played outside. I miss that dog. :bawl:

If you've done research, then you know the answer to this question. Cocker Spaniels are NOT recommended for families with young children.

Google "cocker spaniel children" and read. :yay:

Everything that I have read says they are good with children. My mother had one when she was a kid and said she was great. I was reading that as long as they grow up with the children they are fine.

If you already know the answer you want to hear... why'd you start the thread asking the question...

She was simply asking for some advice from people who have had some personal experience with that breed. Why is it necessary to make a snide comment?

Ketel: My best friend in middle school had a cocker spaniel. Every day when she went home the darn dog had peed on her bed. She wasn't mean to the dog or anything so, she couldn't figure out why her bed seemed to be such a nice target. After her parents had to buy a few mattresses they gave the dog to new owners. Never heard if the new owners had the same problem.

My first hand information is that they ARE NOT good with children.

Be certain to purchase from a reputable breeder that breeds stable cocker spaniels. Unfortunately, over the years they've been terribly overbred and they have a lot of personality issues...separation anxiety and just generally snappy.

They are known to be chewers. And their ears stink.

A few customers have told me they've been bit by Cockers- I have never been around them so I don't know. They have always seemed to me to be more of a senior citizens type of dog...

Are you ready for a PUPPY?? They can be a handful no matter what the breed.
And grooming?

I am glad you are researching the breed :yay:

I am ready for a puppy. I had a golden retriever that died of liver failure about a year ago. I had her since she was 9 weeks old. I wanted to get another golden but have opted to try a smaller breed.

I guess it depends on the dog by some of the responses you got. Well I had one. Then we had a little girl so she was not there first, but our dog took right to her and was very protective of her. Now I can say they do not like rowdiness (sp?). We had two guys that came over that she just down right did not like. She would go over to wherever our daughter was and stand there and growl at these two people whenever they would come over.

My best friend had them growing up. Good, if DUMB, dogs. They did chew a lot, but chew toys help with that. They piddled when people would come over. They also had issues with pooping in the house then eating it. :dead:

My family had bred cockers since before I was born. I was litterally raised with them. The great grandmother of the dogs I have now used to "baby sit me". I used to crawl in with her when she had a litter of pups, chew on her ears, pretty much maul her. Our dogs tolerate a lot from kids. My 2 are actually totally the opposite of the kid haters. They LOVE kids, adult men, not so much. We have bred for years for temperment FIRST, and of course health. We do warn people that cockers are very loyal and can tend to be protective especially of children. Many behavioral issues show up mostly in under socialised dogs. If you keep them away from people other than yourselves they will be more likely to be agressive towards strangers.
Everyone has their own favorite breeds and such. I personally love the cockers, wouldnt have another breed. My girls go just about everywhere with me. The one does have a very slight seperation problem and will howl for about 3 minutes if i leave her at home, but then will go to her favorite past time, Sleeping! But I gotta say I probably created that problem myself by taking her everywhere.

There are good breeders out there. Shop around, ask to see the parents of the pups, check the breeders out. Send me a PM, I can provide you with a couple contacts.
