Collection Agency question

If you tell collection agency ABC not to call your # anymore, but then collection agency XYZ buys the debt from ABC, do you know have to tell XYZ not to call or does it carry over?

I've gotten about 6 different companies calling within the last 10 days for someone who has the same last name as us. I know I've told a few prior to that to stop calling me, the debt is not mine. Wasn't sure how it worked. TIA.

If you're asking about the Do Not Call lists, it doesn't apply to collection agencies..

There are rules governing how often and when they can call, but there is no do not call list (official) for them.

Good luck. We used to get at least 5 calls a day at our old number for collections for 2 different people I've never heard of. I asked them not to call back but the calls kept coming. When we moved up here we didn't have any problems until the last month or so. Again, for someone I don't know but at least it's only one call a day. We're moving next week so maybe the third time's a charm.

No, not the do not call list. I'm already on that.

You need to send a cease and desist to the original lender and to the collection agency.

Can't to the original lender. It is not my debt so the only info I get is the person they are looking for, the name of the company and a #. If I can't help them I wonder even if they'd stay on the phone long enough for me to get an address. They try to hang up in the middle of my "do not call me again" speech. :ohwell:

In MD there is an affidavit you can sign and submit that states you have a similar last name to so and so and that it is NOT your debt.

I'm serious. If it is not your debt and they keep calling have some fun with it.

I get them to hang up on me and eventually they stop calling. A line I use in our classes is the reason I run them is I hope to someday get (Name) in my class so I can tell him/her someone is looking for them.

Co worker suggested giving them 867-5309 as the new contact # for so and so.

I mess with telemerketers and try to keep them on the line as long as possible.

Research the person they are calling for on the internet. Also check them out on maryland judiciary case search. I had very similar experience and researched on line. found her and her current cell phone # and address (posted on line resume - silly girl). I gave this information to the collection agency and they never called again. I also e-mailed the girl asking her to stop using our address and to kindly pay her bills or contact the collection agencies as these calls are highly annoying. A few months later I did get a notice from USPS of an address change request she had made.

good luck!

The person they are looking for has the same last name as ours for a reason

Well then give them that persons current information.

I have gotten numerous calls for my ex-husband, my husband's ex-wife, his former step-son and mother in law. I give the collection agencies their current numbers and even cell numbers if I have them.

My ex, his ex and all the others previously involved in our lives have NEVER gotten collection calls for us at their homes because there aren't any collection calls being made.

It's not my job to cover up for anyone - either talk to them yourself if you owe the debt or PAY IT.

It would prob start WW3 at our house if I did. I did tell hubby that one of these times I'm gonna be in a real pissy mood and give them so and so's #.

I would suggest doing a credit check on yourself. Usually a good idea to check your status annually. Simple and cheap, usually free for the first inquiry. If it comes out clear, keep it in your back pocket. If there is a discrepancy, you can take it up with either of the credit agencies (Experian, Equifax and TransUnion) who may show a problem. Yes, a pain to fix if there is an issue that is not yours, but worth the effort to protect your credit rating. With that, you can tell the callers to check their own records and find the correct person. I've gone through the same thing with someone with my same first AND last name.

Our last names are only the same. They call because they are probably doing a skip trace and are hoping we are related. Our credit is good. We paid every debt off right before we bought our house. I do have a mental note though to check our credit at least once a year, just in case.

www.annualcreditreport.com

This is the site where you obtain your free (for real) credit report from TransUnion, Equifax and Experian.

I rotate and pull one every 4 months as a personal credit monitoring move. If I see something on one that should not be there I will go check the others and resolve the issue.

I have also frozen our reports and do a check of all accounts (banking, investing) daily. A friend in law enforcement advised this and added, "how big of a head start do you want to give the thief?"

Don't tell him you did it. they are skip tracers - they will find this person eventually. the annualcreditreport site given by the other poster is legit and free 1 X per year. I've been using it for years.
